It depends on the total length of the rail.Normal is one on either end and every three feet in between.

The bracket measures 3 1/8" by 3 1/18". When mounted, the additional bracket rails add a little more to the thickness and becomes 3/8" thick (as opposed to the plate's base thickness of 1/8").
