Sima SL-20LX overview

  • 1Description

The SL-20LX LED Light from Sima is a compact on-camera light suitable for video and photo applications.

The SL-20LX features 36 individual LEDs that produce a brightness of 600 lumens and provide up to 25 ft of illumination.

The SL-20LX also features an interlocking design that allows you to connect multiple units together for increased light output. An unlimited number of units can be joined together by simply connecting one into another using the integrated shoe mount and interlock slots. (The SL-20LX can also be interlocked with the Sima SL-100LX.)

The SL-20LX has a built-in shoe mount adapter that allows direct attachment on top of most cameras. In addition, it also comes with a side-mount bracket that can be used to attach the light on the side of the camera. The bracket secures to the bottom of the camera on one end, and to the bottom of the light on the other end, and is length-adjustable so you can move the camera and light closer together or farther apart. The bracket has a shoe mount that the light attaches directly onto.

The SL-20LX is powered by a built-in lithium-ion battery that's rechargeable using an included AC adapter. The light also has an On/Off power switch so you can turn it off between shots.

    Sima SL-20LX reviews

    36-LED On-Camera Light is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 170.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Nice Surprise I bought 4 of them and am ordering two more to create a 6 lite array. Dimming? I simply turn off individual lights in the array to get the look I like. At 44,000 color temp. - they are green. I recommend 1/8 or 1/4 minus green gel. 1/4 CTB blue takes them towards daylight. Throws about 90 degrees of VERY even light. They charge in less than 4 hours and I am getting about 50 minutes of constant light from each. They are highly efficient lights - starting at 3 feet close in - you can back up a foot or so for every light you add to the array. (a 6 lite array should make a 10 foot shot possible - I'm at about 8 feet now with a 4 array.)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The perfect balance I'm just getting started with some macro photography and needed a good constant light for cheap. This is exactly what I needed. The rechargeable battery is great and last a long time, it's super bright, comes with the mounting bracket and the plastic in front diffuses the light to a certain extent and of course, it's dirt cheap. There are a few cons of course. It's not all that big, and the individual LEDs are very visible in reflections because the light isn't perfectly defused. However, considering the next alternative is 4 or 5 times more expensive, this is the ideal light for amateurs that need light for video or macro

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bright The light is really bight. 600 lumens. (about 58 watt). The LEDs cast a green tint so you'll need to correct your white balance. I would have given it 5 stars if the battery was external. I made an external swapable battery by opening the light and replacing the internal battery with a 3 AA (3.7 volt) battery holder and used velco to mount it on the case. Now I can change batteries at will.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well enough Works as it's supposed to, but there's a couple things they don't mention till you get the product and look at the manual: Was hoping to use it while plugged in like a small, cool running lamp. Turns out it can't be turned on while plugged in/charging. Also, the charge time is supposedly 2.5 - 3 hours, but the light only lasts 45-60 minutes. Didn't expect much life out of it from it's size, but that charge-time to use-time ratio is a little inconvenient.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small, balanced, versatile and inexpensive LED light I primarily purchased it for taking pictures of small objects at art show. It seems that the light is well balanced in comparison to many flash lights. I like that the light can be mounted on a tripod, directly on camera instead of external flash, or on the plate supplied with the light. Off course being small the light is not soft. The rechargeable battery works well. The only thing I do not like are plastic parts where the threads are. The light is continuous and there is an on-off switch only.To dim it and diffuse I made a diffuser from bottom of small white plastic rubbing alcohol bottle. I do not think you can get a better light for the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The price is right I had purchased one of the same units about 4 years ago and used it quite frequently when taking videos in dull lit places and wish I had ordered two. Well, I did just that and am happy I did as now I have twice the light. The lites couple nice together. This shipment included a mounting bar for cameras that don't have a mounting shoe. I am very pleased with this product and never had any problems with the first one I purchased 4 years ago(still working like new). I've ordered quite a few items from B&H and am very pleased with them,...... plus the shipping is fast.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from NICE AND SIMPLE This is a great light for Handycams as it provides many great uses. With some creativity, even photographers can use this light for either modelllng light (for focus in very dark environments), for effects (use some gels and play with it), and even for motivated light (think fridge lights, computer screen lights, etc). However, in addition to some obvious flaws (like slightly off temperature, no dimmers, and non-replaceable battery), I have to say that on my JVC HD-6 came, you need to go manual exposure with this light. Reason is, the cam (without light) meters the subjects perfectly and does its own fill should some slight backlighting occurs. So when on Auto (and this light turned on), the background seems a bit too dark for me (fools the cam's metering). I suspect modern cams are made easy for the user so it tends to meter subjects favorably while stretching its dynamic range to accommodate the background (to some degree), so when a light as bright as this comes into play, the cam thinks the subjects overlit and thus darkens the background (which results in feathered light fall-off and thus noise in shadowy backgrounds). So if you use this light, do try to consider going manual or semi-auto exposure (or compensate your exposure to around +0.5 to +1.5 EV). Ultimately, this light is small, light (no pun intended), and powerful for all handycams out there :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Nice Surprise First off, the camera bracket is made from 3/16in thick stamped anodized aluminum - about 3/4 of the bar is covered with a camera/tripod gripping ridged plastic - the 1/4in thumb screw and removable hot-shoe held with another 1/4in thumb screw - are all professional grade components. I put two of these brackets together and voila! an 'israeli-arm' for my camera monitor. Thank you very much. I bought four 20LXs - they come uncharged - it took 4 hours of charge for the red light to turn to green - that happened within 5 minutes of each other for all 4 lights to go green. The cases are all black, by the way, not the nasty 'prototype' green shown in the product shot. The lens covering the LEDs is slightly convex - directing the light in an approximate 80-90 degree spread. It's very, very even within that spread. My 10watt quartz camera light was horrible by comparison in evenness of light. In one-to-one light output, I would rate the 20LX at about 1.8 times the 10watt quartz lamp - or 18 watts. My actual testing was to use a 4 light array of 20LXs against a 500watt halogen lamp set 10 feet from a white wall (with a living room lamp and shade just in front) and record the settings before the wall blew out to zebra strips. Here's what I recorded on my Canon XL2 (with no gain) before blowing out the picture: 500 watt halogen: 1/30 shutter f2.6 4 20XLs: 1/8 shutter f2 About a 4 time difference. Which puts these lights at about a 30watt halogen equivalent - per light. Amazing. (Math-types please check my findings - I'm an English major. ;-) Conclusion: LED lights are incredibly efficient in directing light. The 20LX belongs in everyone's kit and I am getting 2 more to build up a 6 light array. I hope you found this helpful. I love these little darlings. I think you will too.
