Lowel 44 overview

  • 1Description

The Lowel DV Creator 44, TO-84 Case offers four different types of light fixtures for a variety of lighting situations, as well as the TO-84 hard carrying case. This is a kit supplied with bulbs for use with 120V AC.

The unique umbrella-like Rifa EX44 16 x 16" softlight allows set-up in 60 seconds or less. Bathe almost anything in luxurious soft light, from talking heads to table-top stills. Its quick-change power cord easily converts for use with professional battery belts, allowing it to work at 12V, 14V and 30V in addition to 120 and 230V. It's the perfect complement to today's compact, light-sensitive, digital cameras and film stocks.

With its high-intensity #2 reflector & prismatic glass, the tiny focusable Pro-light is more efficient than a Fresnel of equal wattage, yet it gives an exquisite even light, with Fresnel-like shadow quality. It can be used as a low-level key or accent light, fill light (with diffusion), or backlight.

The wide focusing range of the Omni-light makes it a flexible key or backlight. Add diffusion or an umbrella, and it's a soft fill source.

Compact, rugged and versatile, the broad-throw Tota-light can be used with its umbrella or gel-frame and diffusion as a soft key, fill, or backlight. With its adjustable reflectors, it can be a smooth and even background light, or point it at the ceiling to raise the ambient (base) light level of a room. Tota-lights are also widely used for photographic copy work.

The Rifa EX accepts many different wattages and types of bulbs, when you purchase the appropriate socket adapter, available separately
Accessory exchange lampheads allow use of daylight fluorescent screw-threaded lamps
The Pro-light's versatility can be increased by adding a DC adapter cable & swapping its bulb for use as a camera-top fixture
Use the included light modification devices to alter the color, intensity, quality and shape of the light
The large TO-84 kit case holds everything, including the light stands, for storage and transportation

Lowel 44 reviews

DV Creator 44, TO-84 Case is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best budget light kit I'm a college student studying film and video at Columbia. We've used the Lowel lighting kits to light film and I've since starting my own production company. I went back to Lowel because I've never had a problem before with any of their lights and I decided to get an upgraded version from the ones I've used at school. My, my...what a great light kit. This is THE set for the low budget filmmaker. You cannot beat four lights, the gels and gel holders, lightbulb cases, stands, cords, the whole shebang is here. I opt'ed the TO-84 carrying case over the TO-83 because this one has wheels and trust me, even for a light weight kit, it can get tiresome carrying the handle. DO NOT get the soft carrying case, if the lights are not completely cool, you can damage the inside. Definitely worth the money. Now the cons: I did have a risky set up involving a Pro light with the 200w bulb to fall six feet to the ground. The only damage? The bulb. Also it can get real hot really quickly and takes some time to cool down but that's the nature of the tungsten lights.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A great kit that continues to evolve I first got one of these kits at my last job and liked it from the start. It's compact and versatile. It comes with an assortment of gels and accessories. If handled properly even its more fragile parts will last a long time, but spare parts are easy to order if you break something. We got a second one a while later and noticed that a lot of little improvements had been made, like the switches and cords and things like that. The only weakness was the hard case; the case for the first one we ordered cracked in the corners, and the silver case feet were ripped out by the airline.I just ordered one as a travel light kit at my new job and am very impressed. Little improvements continue to be made and the case is more durable, with additional handles and larger plastic feet, and now the case even has wheels on one end for ease of transport. One caveat: this kit does not come with extra bulbs as I believe previous versions did. You'll want to order extra bulbs right away. It has two plastic foam-lined cases to hold the bulbs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent versatile portable kit I have used three DV Creator 44 kits: two at my last job and one I just purchased for my new job. Each version of the kit I've purchased has had upgrades from the previous...nicer switches or a more durable case, for example. This is a great, compact, and versatile set of lights. It's well designed, durable if handled properly, and packs a lot of utility into one rolling case. It comes with a set of gels and accessories, and the case has room to add a few little things of your own (gloves, for example). One caveat: this kit did not include spare bulbs. Be ready to order your own spares; however, the kit does have a pair of foam-lined bulb holder cases so they can be tucked safely away without taking up much room. If you break something and need spares, they're easy to order. (Interns...what can I say) This kit is great for traveling and has everything you need for an interview setup, for example. Previous versions I've used weren't much fun to get through air travel, and the cases didn't weather the trips very well. The one I just received has larger, more durable feet and now has a handle on one and with wheels on the other, so now I can just roll it to my destination. Like I said, this is my third purchase of this kit and I'd purchase it again. It's compact, versatile, well designed, and continues to be refined.
