Pro Co Sound RAT 2 overview

  • 1Description

The RAT 2 from Pro Co Sound provides classic RAT tone in a compact and portable design, ideal for casual or professional guitarists. Great as a primary distortion or as a boost to your amp's natural distortion, the RAT 2 excels at versatility.

Knobs for filter, volume, and distortion let you find the perfect settings. Turn the filter all the way up to roll off brittle high-end, or turn it down to let your guitar's brightness come through. True bypass switching ensures that no unwanted noise enters your signal path when the pedal is off.

The virtually indestructible steel construction is made for life on the road. Industrial-grade knobs, switches, and jacks stand up to the rigors of daily use. The sloped face and glow-in-the-dark graphics make for easy stomping and settings changes, even during a lighting change. The unit can be operated from a 9V battery or from a wall outlet.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Distortion; Good Price It seems almost superfluous to write a review for the RAT in 2013. It's a pedal so seemingly so ubiquitous that I am often shocked when I don't see it in at least one rig on a given night at almost any kind of show. That said, between the price and the quality of the sound, it's not really a surprise. In the past I've used the ProCo RAT to great effect (no pun intended) on recordings, but never owned one. The experiences I've had with it, both witnessing uses of it and my recording time were enough to pique my interest. However, it's only been after purchasing it that I've had the opportunity to more fully experiment with applications for it. For higher gain, modern rock-ish, punky, power chord-y walls of sound, the distortion knob sitting between 4 and 7 is a solid choice that, at least in my opinion and experience, sounds great even on it's own through any amp. Higher than that and it starts to take on fuzz-like qualities that more than a few folks I know would and have enjoyed for soloing, and lead type lines, with pretty sustain. It's worth mentioning that to get more out of this pedal, I've found that actually using a boost/low gain overdrive before it (I've heard that a tube screamer is a good choice, but I can't vouch for that specifically) really coaxes more of the fullness and hairy qualities of the RAT into fruition. Outside of guitar, it has plenty of homes. I haven't been too happy with it on bass (though it does maintain a good deal of low-end), but in the context of pure noise rigs and for other so-called experimental applications its definitely well suited. A thing of negative note is that, while using a daisy chained power supply, it tends to create a low, rumbling sound, similar to the sound of a ground loop issue, so it seems that powering it with its own independent power supply is necessary. Design wise, the RAT is wonderful; Compact and extremely sturdy, definitely intended for use on the road with the realities of tour life in mind. In my opinion, it's rather aesthetically pleasing, too... though that's probably more subjective than anything else I've written about it. If modding is your game, there are plenty of simple mods that seem to push the pedal even farther. In short, it's probably the best quality/usability to dollar ratio in any drive pedal I've found, and it definitely lives up to its reputation.
