  • 1Description

This Ef series Precision Matte Grid Lines Ef-D Interchangeable Focusing Screen from Canon provides three horizontal and five vertical etched grid lines to facilitate easier composition and horizon alignment.

This "D" type focusing screen assists in keeping straight lines in a subject straight, positioning subjects off-center, or by keeping compositions in a series consistent from one shot to the next. The camera's AF points remain fully visible when using this screen.

Compatible with Canon EOS 40D, 50D, and 60D
Focusing screens are delicate and should only be handled using the included tool for installation

Precision Matte Grid Lines Ef-D Interchangeable Focusing Screen is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 168.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Piece of Cake Instructions were well laid out, and while a certain degree of dexterity is required, I had no trouble with the installation. Best to lay out a clean white cloth on your work surface and have lots of light for installation. Works quite well, though it would have been nice to see a set of lines at the thirds rather than so close to the edges. No matter - it works as advertised and is a great aid in composing a shot and keeping your horizons level. The packaging is great, and you get a nice case to keep your original screen and the installation tool dust free and protected. Be sure to change your camera settings when you switch to this screen; there's a preset for all three types.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Helpful Installation was easier than expected. It's very nice to have a grid in the viewfinder instead of just liveview. I would have been fine with just a rule of thirds grid but the extra markings may come in handy. Note that the vertical lines have rule of 3rd's markings but the horizontal lines do not. I was expecting the lines to be darker and more pronounced, they are hard to see with a darker subject. Overall I think it's worth it for the price. It's a nice cheap little add-on. You could have a custom made screen that's even better but they are 5 times the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth it I bought this for the 60D, which has the electronic level in the viewfider and LCD, but this is a great addition when you don't want to fiddle with the displays to get the level. In addition, for architectural photos, it's good to help you minimize keystoning, so in a sense, it helps with the front to back leveling, which the electronic level on the 60D doesn't. Another advantage is for gaging overlap for panoramas (wish Canon kept their panorama mode). And lastly, a great help for lining up objects for rule of thirds shooting. The focusing screen was really easy to install (there's even a video tutorial on the the Canon DLC site). In addition to the physical installation, theres a menu setup for the EF-D screen, but again, very easy to do.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Should be default 40D focusing screen! The usefulness of the grid lines on this focusing screen grows on me as I use it. This should really be the default focusing screen that Canon installs on every 40D since it is quite easy to ignore the grid lines within the viewfinder if you do not care to use them for reference. Note that the grid lines do not divide the viewfinder image exactly into thirds, if you were expecting some rule of thirds composition aid here. The installation instructions are fairly clear; I switched the focusing screen in just a couple of minutes. After screen installation, remember to set the 40D to use the Ef-D Focusing Screen option: (1) From the Menu, go to the Custom Function Set IV (Fn IV : Operation/Others); (2) Select and set the (1 : Ef-D) option. One thing that is not mentioned in the installation instructions is that the Canon-Europe Web site actually has a nice video how-to that describes how to replace the focusing screen@

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Upgrade for 60D The EF-D Focusing Screen is a great upgrade from the original EF-A screen, especially considering the price. Search EF-D Focusing Screen on youtube for some great tutorials, this made it easier to install, and remember to select the proper focusing screen in your camera's menu. Try to install the screen in a clean and dustless(as much as possible)area, or make sure you have a good blower as to not physically touch the screen. Product greatly improves functionality and helps with composing/lining up your shots.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Essential IMHO, this is a must get for most photographers, hobby or otherwise. The installation (which I was worried about) is ridiculously simple and the screen makes a significant difference in my photography. Consider that most people hold their head at an angle naturally, and so without noticing it. If you've ever had problems getting level pictures, this is the cure. As a bonus, the grid provides the classic tic-tac-toe pattern, and so is doubly useful for composition (the rule of 3rds, etc). You see your composition right as you take your picture. Forget about bubble levels, on the tripod or on the camera. As anyone who takes pictures knows, it matters not if the picture is level or not, but only if the picture LOOKS level. The grid pattern will allow you to level major horizontal or vertical picture elements, whether you are offset from them or not! Don't be without this execellent upgrade to your camera.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Even a beginner can install it! I have never opened up my camera before, but the 3-step instructions with pictures made it super easy. Time to read instructions thoroughly and change out the screen took under 5 min. I like the grid, but I'm used to working with my point-and-shoot's 1/3 gridlines. This is dvides into halves and fourths. Still very helpful. The Nikon D90's grid lights up at night along with the AF points, this grid does not light up so it's very hard to see against dark objects or in low light.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect lineup! You can't go wrong with this screen, it's crisp, lines are sharp and well balanced and not so intense where it could become a composition annoyance. It's perfect for anyone who has difficulty in alignment adjusting. Installs in a matter of seconds. It should have been the standard screen equipped with the camera. I would highly recommend this to anyone owning a 40 or 50D, enthusiast to pro.
