    Sony PCM-D50 Reviews

PCM-D50 Professional Portable Stereo Digital Audio Recorder is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 154.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent for locations sound recording I use the Sony Audio Recorder for sound recording at different locations, especially in Weddings and Concert. I have tried to use the built-in mic to record ambient sound and tried to record music from line input. Both situation impressed me. It did a very good job. The build quality is great. The price is competitive to other brands. Especially, this is a cheap price but similar quality compared to its higher level model. I learned that the more expensive model got a very high grade mic compared to this model. However, I do not know the difference but I am happy with this Sony PCM-D50 recorder to give a satisfying result and good price tag.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Superior built-in mics I needed a portable recorder that would capture quality audio without the use of additional microphones or cables. After reading numerous reviews, I narrowed down my options to the PCM-D50 and the Zoom H4n. Both were fairly intuitive to use. And the H4n was the more versatile of the two--and probably the better value, although it is very cheaply built; the battery compartment door nearly broke off in my hand the first time I opened it. The deciding factor for me, though, was the sound quality of the internal mics. And there was no comparison. When turned up loud enough to get a decent recording level with its internal mics, the H4n was almost unusably noisy. The PCM-50, by comparison, was virtually noise free.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great recorder. I think this is a great device, Ive had it for about 2 months and have been recording like a maniac with it. If you are considering it , by looks you might think it's to bulky. If you weight it out with ease of use and audio quality, the bulky scare will quickly go away. great mic pickup awesome stereo separation great battery life easy to use and drop files after use. audio divide button is a great feature as well. *the only thing i would like to have seen is a gate function and built in xlr inputs (but i haven't even needed additional mics yet. the windscreen is a must, uhm thanks thats it i recommend this .

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very fine, ...but not for all I'm musician and own the PCM-D50 in order to record jam of acoustic guitar. The recording give a sound a lot detailed, crystalline, and with a remarkable dynamic range. Im quiet ambient, in order not to have too much thini sound, you must to find the right positioning of the recorder and is better to not exceed the 5 Input level (noise over 5/6). In every case the sound that is obtained is optimal in order to work it in post-production (Eq Parametric). If you want a professional recorder to work the tracks in post the D50 pcm is very fine, if you prefers a softer and ready to use sound is better to go on PCM-M10 (less professional grade but more usefull without post-work)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Studio Quality Recorder I use this product for atmos recordings for film as well as recording theatrical an musical rehearsals and performances. It works effortlessly for each purpose, easy 10/10, with exceptional digital gain control across the board - clean and sweet sounding quiet atmospheres, to crisp high volume rock concerts. The inbuilt mics provide excellent sound quality in a variety of environments, with a minimum of handling noise even when adjusting gain etc during recording. The battery life is superb and the ergonomics of the device are well considered and make it extremely easy to use. I highly recommend this piece of equipment!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sounds great I use this for field recordings and rehearsals. I have also tried it to record vinyl. It may be the way to go for me. When recording, you will definitely need a windscreen with you, and I am thinking of getting the remote because the mics are so sensitive. Thats the price you pay if you want the best recordings. I used a Sony MZ-M200 minidisc recorder before this. The PCM-D50 isn't even in the same ball park. Navigating through the functions of the PCM-D50 is very straight forward, not much need for the manual there. By the way; I don't think this was their primary motive, but it makes a terrific MP3 player.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sturdy Beauty The recorder is beautiful, and built like a tank.... I've done recordings of live bands - electronic/rock and the sound quality is amazing.... there's absolutely NO background noise and the backlit display is ideal for setting levels in dark rooms! I've also done some home recordings of myself playing acoustic guitar and singing - and when the D50 is in the right position, the recordings are almost better than what I can achieve when using condenser mics and Mackie Onyx pre-amps!!! I'm VERY satisfied.... oh, and did I mention.... It's beautiful, and draws lots of attention when I show it off

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic! I use this primarily for research interviews and educational materials preparation. It is simple to use, indestructible, always reliable, amazingly flexible and has all the advanced features you could want. A simple mini Y cable will allow you to plug in two mono microphones to maintain stereo separation so you don't need the overly expensive XLR attachment if you want to use external mics. The built in mics are perfect for most applications. The previous model came with two battery holders and this one really should at least offer an extra as an accessory. You need the windscreen if you will be outdoors. This has great quality sound and is really a great machine.
