Astatic 878HL-2 Desktop Omnidirectional Dynamic Paging Microphone
Key Features
  • Convenient Desktop Design
  • Push- or Lift-to-Talk Operation
  • Selectable Output Impedance
  • Dynamic Capsule Requires No Power Source
The Astatic 878HL-2 from CAD is a desktop omnidirectional dynamic paging microphone intended for use with commercial paging systems in schools, restaurants, warehouses, medical facilities, and more. The dynamic capsule requires no power source, and its omnidirectional polar pattern provides a generous pickup area. A programmable switch allows push-to-talk or lift-to-talk functionality, and selectable output impedance makes the 878HL-2 flexible for use with most paging systems and amplifiers.

The four-conductor, two-shield cable is 7' in length and unterminated to allow balanced or unbalanced connectivity. With a frequency response of 80 Hz to 12 kHz, its audio output is optimized for vocal transmission. The rugged, molded Cycolac housing and die-cast zinc base maintain durability while remaining lightweight. Its desktop design incorporates four non-skid feet to inhibit slippage and surface marring.

Programmable Push-to-Talk Switch
Long-life DPDT leaf switches and the choice of either a simple push-to-talk bar with locking capabilities or lift-to-talk operation ensure easy operation.
Switchable Output Impedance
A flexible output impedance switch makes the 878HL-2 flexible for use with most paging systems and amplifiers.
Unterminated Cable
The 878HL-2 is supplied with 7' of four-conductor, two-shield cable wired normally open for relay control.
Intelligible Sound
The 80 Hz to 12 kHz frequency response is smooth and peak free, with a slight rise above 2 kHz to impart enhanced intelligibility.
Non-Skid Feet
Four molded non-skid, non-marring feet are located under the zinc die-cast base.

A bargain!

An amazingly versatile microphone. Works with high or low impedance systems. Works by either push to talk or lift to talk. Also has a lock-on switch for long announcements. It has an extra set of contacts to mute music or close a relay. Priced way below the competition.

Will this work with an XLR terminal plug adapter ...

Will this work with an XLR terminal plug adapter using the un-terminated wires? Like with the Rolls XLM113 3-Pin XLR Male Termination Plug for Bare Wire Connection. I read it has 4 wires and not sure what the 4th wire is for.

It wont work as a push to talk function, however it may work as an always on.

I want to hook this up to a desktop base station ...

I want to hook this up to a desktop base station to communicate via FSR/GMSR. The mic connection to my desktop radio is 2.5mm (female) stereo. Could I use a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter (4 conductor), and then pair that to a 4-pole 3.5mm male to AV 4 pin screw solderless shield connection? Of course, apply heatshrink over the solderless shield to reduce chance of corrosion and better secure the bond.
Asked by: Darren
This mic was not designed to be connected to that style of mic connection, and any attempt to connect multiple adapters can not be guaranteed to work. With relay contacts and possible impedance mismatches being potential issues, I would not recommend it.
