The Rode NTG2 is a condenser shotgun microphone designed for professional audio capturing in the field or indoors. With a history of manufacturing quality studio microphones, Rode has implemented low-noise output electronics and wide frequency bandwidth, both of which attribute to the NTG2's broadcast sound quality.

The supercardioid polar pattern and line-plus-gradient acoustic design effectively minimize audio and noise at the off-axis (sides) of the microphone, while the front of the capsule accurately reproduces incoming audio signal. The result is greater intelligibility and signal-to-noise ratio when using the NTG2 in noisy environments.

The NTG2 is powered with an internal 1.5V AA battery or an external +48V phantom power source. The output is a standard 3-pin XLR male connector.

The microphone features a rugged, all metal, lightweight enclosure that is ideal for camera mounting, yet durable enough to withstand the rigors of heavy road use. The Rode NTG2 is packaged with a microphone stand mount and windscreen.

Battery Or Phantom Powered
The Rode NTG2 can be powered with an internal 1.5V AA battery or external +48V phantom power source.
Supercardioid Polar Pattern
The supercardioid polar pattern and line-gradient acoustic principle allow for a narrow pick up pattern at the front of the capsule while minimizing noise at the off-axis sections.
Lightweight Durable Construction
The NTG2 features a lightweight metal housing that is ideal for camera mounting.
Low Handling Noise
Low-noise output electronics provide high signal-to-noise ratio. The NTG2 is designed to also reduce noise caused by handling, rigid mounting hardware, loose cabling, etc.

NTG2 Battery or Phantom Powered Condenser Shotgun Microphone is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 433.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cant beat it for the price! This mic has already proven its worth to me after only two weeks of ownership. For the most part I use it for location sound, but I have done some dialog tests and it works pretty well for that too. Pros: Its lightweight, something that is EXTREMELY important to me as I do alot of biking and skiing and hiking with my gear. Its also incredibly simple and doesn't require any power from the camera, although it can use phantom power if its internal battery dies. So far, it seems to be extremely robust. Cons: There are pretty limited controls on the mic, the power can not be turned off without extracting the battery, and it has a shorter then ideal pickup range for some applications.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Value for money I purchased Rode NTG 2 recently. I tested it with my camcorder to record the audio (indoor). The sound is clear and natural. It rejects noise at the side fairly well. At outdoor recording with windy condition, the sound is just as good and clear (except I need to minimise the wind noise). Overall this audio device does the job I want and its performance is great considering its cost. The only downside I have there is no on-off switch for battery. So you will not know when the battery dies off. It is a little hassle to remove the battery each time you are not using unless you are on phantom power. Otherwise this is a great product for budget conscious videographer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT mic for a lot of applications I've got two NTG-2 mics now. We've mounted them on our XF-100 and XA-20. We've put them on the Rode boom pole. We've even used them for voiceover work, mounting them on a stand and having a speaker face them at an oblique angle in our portable sound booth. One AA battery provides the power you need. I've yet to use the low pass filter. The foam windscreen cuts down on typical room noise, but we use a zeppelin in the field and on breezy days the deadbeat over the zeppelin. This mic is easy to use. Reliable. And it's all metal construction feels solid. It's been dropped while in the pouch a couple times, yet it keeps working. I'd definitely recommend this mic to a friend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The NTG-2 captures sound as it is. I'm using the NTG-2 as an external mic on my Sony CX550. I'm forced to do my recordings in a less than ideal environment so the onboard mic sounds very hollow. With the NTG-2 hooked directly to the camera, I can use the sound track from the camera instead of making a seperate recording with another mic. With the mic placed anywhere inside two feet the recordings are very pure. If you think a shotgun mic will pick up distant sounds at high levels, you'll be disappointed. The NTG-2 does a good job of isolating the target source outside of 2 feet, but it does picks up some ambient sound. The bottom line is that it does exactly what I want it to do.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from RODE NTG-2 for VO I recently purchased the RODE NGT-2 shotgun mic for voice overs. I have a number of mics and I love to check out and buy new ones. After reading about people using shotguns for VO I decided to join the band wagon. The Senn 416 of course came up, but so did the price so I thought this would be a nice way to try this style. My new NGT-2 arrived quickly from B and H and I plugged it right into my current interface and computer. It sounded good, a little strong at first and muddy at a close distance. With some adjustment to my distance and EQ settings it sounds great. It cuts room noise a little, not as much as I had anticipated.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All around great shotgun condenser mike I use the Rode NTG-2 mounted on my camera or on a mic stand to gather actors voices, and location sound. I like the directionality of the NTG-2. The sound is very warm even at 40 ft. The only concern I have is that the supplied windscreen isn't enough for even small gusts of wind. I would recommend the Rode Dead Cat for the NTG-2. Also to turn on the microphone you have to unscrew the battery casing and then insert the battery and screw the casing back on so it takes 20-30 sec to turn On.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best purchase I almost didn't make I was about to start a very low budget documentary project and almost didn't make this purchase, thinking I might be able to get away with the on-camera microphone on my Sony XH-A1s. Thank goodness I didn't. This microphone picked up excellent audio, even in crowded noisy environments and I now have tons of quality (and USABLE!) footage that I would not otherwise have been able to get. I used the microphone mounted on the camera which worked pretty well. Of course, if the camera (and therefore mic) isn't pointing at someone the audio quality isn't there (if it's there at all). If I can have a bigger crew next time, I'll definitely go with a boom pole.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from One Of The Best Shotgun Mics When I dove head first into the world of filmming with DSLR's I was told I would need to get my sound in an external manner since the audio off the DSLR isn't that great. I knew the RODE products were known for quality so I got the B&H RODE NTG 2 Kit. The choice I made was definatly the right one. The sound out of the external mic is fantastic. My film projects finally looked like films and now sounded like them as well. I use this as my main source to capture sound on all my shoots now. The price for the kit is more then resonable especially once you hear the kind of quality you get out of it. There is honestly only one real problem though. It comes in the form of low audio gain when used with the Zoom H4n. Seperatly the devices are amazing but together the problem arises. I was definatly worried when I saw the audio levels were not breaking -6 (it should be around -12) when I was recording at mic volume of 100! I read around and found I would need a preamp but being the director, director of photography, co-sound guy, and art director I didn't want to carry around a pre-amp that needed to be plugged in (I was filming by a river). Luckily RODE has made something to help this situation in the form of the RODE D-Powerplug. It adds 20db gain which is way more then enough to get the right audio levels. So with the Zoom H4n, the RODE NTG-2 and the RODE D-Powerplug I saved easily over $300-$500.
