Like all Pentax lenses, this lens is treated with smc coating for maximum light transmission, sharp definition, and high contrast images. In addition, SP (Super Protective) coating made of a special fluoride compound has been applied to the front surface of the lens through the use of a unique evaporation process. As a result, the lens offers excellent water- and oil-repellent performance and makes for easier cleaning should the lens be accidentally smeared with fingerprints or cosmetics.

Designed for Digital SLRs
The image circle in DA-series lenses is designed to perfectly match the 23.5mm x 15.7mm size of the CCD used in Pentax digital SLRs to optimize camera performance. This design also contributes to a drastic reduction in size, weight and production cost, compared to 35mm-format counterparts with similar specifications.
DA*-Series
DA*-series lenses feature tightly sealed, weather-resistant and dust-resistant construction that enhance durability for use in rain or dusty conditions.

SP (Super Protective) coating made of a special fluoride compound has been applied to the front surface of the lens to offer excellent water- and oil-repellent performance.
Quick-Shift Focus
Quick-Shift Focus System allows to instantly switch the focus mode from AF to manual with a slight twist of the focus ring.
High Optical Quality
Incorporates Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass lens elements to compensate for chromatic aberration.

Incredible image quality

I've been a professional Pentax shooter for over 30 years. I recently got the 200 f/2.8 to compliment the 300 f/4 that I already owned (which is brilliant, but pretty specialized because of its length). The 200 and 300 are clearly siblings, looking almost identical except for the length. Like its big brother, the 200 offers exceptional image quality, tank-like construction, and silent focusing. It's a joy to use and easier to hand-hold than the 300. My only beef, and this has been brough up before, is the lack of a tripod collar. This is a relatively heavy lens and even on my beefy tripod I defintely get lens creep because of the torque with the camera-mounted tripod plate. I am searching 3rd-party collars, and hope I can find one that fits. If you rarely use a tripod, then you won't notice, but for those of us who live and work on three legs, it is absolutely a design flaw. Image quality is paramount, but stability isn't far behind. I hope Pentax addresses this in future upgrades. If you are a fellow Pentaxian looking for a mid-to-long telephoto, this should be at the top of your list.

Excellent full-frame long telephoto prime

Although marked as a DA* cropped sensor lens, this lens covers full-frame very sharply, even in the corners, without evident vignetting. I tested this lens at f/8, which I would expect to use outdoors, the primary use for a long-tele lens in any event, so I have no data about its sharpness near maximum aperture. It's a heavy lens, of course, with a mostly metal construction, 77mm filter size, and weather resistant. Overall construction seems excellent and there was no trace of decentering or poor assembly in my copy.

Excellent K-1 full-frame telephoto

Although listed as a DA* lens, the 200 covers the entire K-1 full-frame sharply, basically to the limits of the 36MP sensor. No evident FF vignetting. The CA is visible, as reported by many, but readily fixable in Lightroom or ACR. Lightroom has a good profile for this lens. My copy from BH seemed very well-aligned, with no noticeable decentering. The metal body is very stout, but the overly large hood included by Pentax is ridiculous and too bulky to carry in my Pelican case - I'm getting a $7 collapsible rubber hood along with my 77mm filter set.

You won't be disappointed

This lens is larger than expected, it actually dwarfs the camera, but it performs beautifully. The view through the view finder is bright and crystal clear and makes manual focusing a breeze with the mat focusing screen. The pictures it produces are crisp with excellent detail and color. The lens hood, like others have mentioned is a little odd..... Don't really like the snap-lock action.... a little stiff for me. Focusing is quick and quiet and accurate, the first SDM focusing lens I've owned. I use primarily for sporting events so the auto focus really doesn't come into play that much, manual focus most of the time. I really like this lens and am glad I purchased it. If the SDM motor holds out, this lens will be one of my favorites.

Bought lens for K-3ii and have been very impressed. Using it primarily to shoot equestrian events, and the lens has met all expectations.

Extremely sharp.

This may be sharper than my Sigma 70mm f2.8 macro lens. Fast quiet focus and accurate colors.

Great handheld telephoto for K3

I bought the 70-200mm f2.8 and returned it because it was just too heavy to hold by hand. Bought the 200mm f2.8 and 50-135mm f2.8 instead and love both of them. Easy to hold by hand and walk around. The 200mm might have some purple fringing at f2.8 but it disappears by f4. It is very sharp across the frame at all apertures and stunning at f8. Pentax still need to work on their autofocus for action but it works silently and fast enough for other work. The attached photo is heavily cropped and doesn't do this lens justice. The site won't let me upload a full file. It's nice to have f2.8. I really like this lens!

question

on the K-S2 body, there is an AF/MF switch so does one need to switch BOTH lens focus mode and camera body focus mode for either mode to function?
Asked by: Alex
You don't have to touch either. The Quick-Shift Focus System allows you to instantly switch the focus mode from AF to manual with a slight twist of the focus ring.

question

Could this particular lens able to achieve the same beautiful effect (bokeh) as of the 300 mm 2.8 for full frame camera for portraiture?
Asked by: Alfredo
This lens produces a beautiful bookeh effect. Besides, the 300mm equivalence makes for a rather flat deep of focus, which helps to isolate your subject. At the same time it imposes you with a distance to the subject that not always is available indoors, but outdoors is a bendicin, since you can take portraits without even being noticed and then quite spontaneous. Indoors I prefer to use my old film photography SMC Pentax FA 50mm 1.4 AF, with its 75mm equiv. allows for a decent distance to the subject and in low light gives you a thin focus range, and good bokeh. I'm not a pro soy I take photos of friends and realtives and for that use indoors it's OK. Oudoors, when Im traveling the 200 hundred is invaluable por taking people without being noticed and so, not posing for the camera. The lens I have always attached to my camera is a 16-85 zoom, that being slower than the 2 other, is excelent for general use.and for traveling, but is not the same for portraits.Happy 2016.Roberto.
