Pentax 200mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

The Pentax SMCP-DA* 200mm f/2.8 ED (IF) SDM Lens is a high-quality telephoto lens that is designed for exclusive use with Pentax digital SLR cameras. It offers a focal length that is equivalent (in 35mm format) to 300mm. This wide coverage is ideal for a variety of telephoto applications, including portraiture, sports and scenery.

Pentax DA* (DA-Star) zoom lenses come equipped with the SDM System, which assures smoother, quieter auto-focusing operation by using a built-in supersonic motor. When mounted on the K10D digital SLR camera body, the focus mode is automatically switched to SDM-assisted auto-focusing. When mounted on older Pentax digital SLR camera bodies, the conventional autofocus mode using a camera-mounted motor is selected.

Like all Pentax lenses, this lens is treated with smc coating for maximum light transmission, sharp definition, and high contrast images. In addition, SP (Super Protective) coating made of a special fluoride compound has been applied to the front surface of the lens through the use of a unique evaporation process. As a result, the lens offers excellent water- and oil-repellent performance and makes for easier cleaning should the lens be accidentally smeared with fingerprints or cosmetics.

Note: Not compatible with "full-frame" (35mm size) cameras

Designed for Digital SLRs
The image circle in DA-series lenses is designed to perfectly match the 23.5mm x 15.7mm size of the CCD used in Pentax digital SLRs to optimize camera performance. This design also contributes to a drastic reduction in size, weight and production cost, compared to 35mm-format counterparts with similar specifications.
DA*-Series
DA*-series lenses feature tightly sealed, weather-resistant and dust-resistant construction that enhance durability for use in rain or dusty conditions.
SP Coating
SP (Super Protective) coating made of a special fluoride compound has been applied to the front surface of the lens to offer excellent water- and oil-repellent performance.
Quick-Shift Focus
Quick-Shift Focus System allows to instantly switch the focus mode from AF to manual with a slight twist of the focus ring.
High Optical Quality
Incorporates Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass lens elements to compensate for chromatic aberration.

    Pentax 200mm f/2.8 reviews

SMCP-DA* 200mm f/2.8 ED (IF) SDM Autofocus Lens for Digital SLR is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 22.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hand Held Telephoto Lens I wanted a telephoto lens with good reach, excellent image quality and one that could be hand held. The DA* 200mm certainly meets these criteria. Excellent build and excellent image quality. Though I did see some purple fringing in a very high contrast shot, I was well aware of this issue and will avoid it in the future. Not many have purchased the 200mm lens compared to the DA* 300mm, but I am not a birder and hsd other uses for the lens. Being able to hand hold the lens was more important than the greater reasch of the 300mm. Also found that one can use a tripod attached to the camera with this lens and therefore do not need a tripod collar.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from First sample definitely faulty/defective I had been anticipating buying this lens for a while. I finally bought it. It is not too heavy, especially compared to my Sigma 70-200, feels very nice, balanced and olid. Upon my first outing with the lens I took about 50 outdoor shots with good lighting. Practically ALL the shots were out of focus! There were a few which looked relatively decent, but were a far cry from the sharpness I am accustomed to with the Pentax Limited lenses I own and from what I expected from this lens. I believe I simply received a faulty sample, a lemon, have returned it in exchange for another copy. Hopefully I will not be dissapointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very happy with this lens This is my first non-zoom telephoto. My other current lens is Pentax's 18-250 zoom, which is teriffic (versatile) but obviously lacks the aperature range of the 200mm f2.8. Coupled with my K10D I had to upgrade camera software to V.1.30 via the Pentax Website to utilise Super Sonic Motor (SMC), which was very simple. SMC makes for quiet, smooth, quick focussing. Also, K10D's antishake complements lens very well. I use with sport..son's soccer matches and daughter's horsing around; as well as portraiture and animals...cockatoos on feeder, cattle, dogs etc. All these subjects move around a bit so not every photo is a winner, but when you hit the sweet spot the results are great. I have taken some people shots at dusk at f2.8 and the light floods in, making it possible to capture great images in low light. I was tossing up between this and the 300 f4, but with 10 megs on K10D (14 on K20D) there is loads of room for cropping. I love it, but take into account my lack of experience of other similar lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible lens This is an ultra clear lens I use on my K10D for landscapes, wildlife and, most recently, weddings. With a fast aperture, I was able to shoot a wedding ceremony from the back of a (smallish) church using my AF540 flash. I have several 20 X 24 landscape prints that resemble paintings. This is a great lens. The only con is the poor quality lens cover. Broke beyond repair too easily.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No Abberations, quiet operations Only had this a week, but very impressed. Hooked up to my K10D with updated firmware 1.30 (available free from Pentax website) the super sonic motor incorporated in the lens is very quiet and quick. Image quality is terrific and with 10 megapixels allows plenty of cropping while retaining image quality. Great for portraits, low light, moving birds/sports.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent K-1 full-frame telephoto Although listed as a DA* lens, the 200 covers the entire K-1 full-frame sharply, basically to the limits of the 36MP sensor. No evident FF vignetting. The CA is visible, as reported by many, but readily fixable in Lightroom or ACR. Lightroom has a good profile for this lens. My copy from BH seemed very well-aligned, with no noticeable decentering. The metal body is very stout, but the overly large hood included by Pentax is ridiculous and too bulky to carry in my Pelican case - I'm getting a $7 collapsible rubber hood along with my 77mm filter set.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens I am an amateur photographer and shoot mostly wildlife. This lens works very well for small birds if they are within 50 feet (16m). You won't get a full framed shot of a small bird at this distance, but the resolution is ample so you can crop with great results. This lens out performs my 55-300 HD lens because of the wide aperture of 2.8. Stunningly sharp images. This lens weighs 4x that of the 55-300 but it is not unbearable. I previously had the Sigma Bigma 50-500, that is a heavy lens and the reason I sold it! This 200mm/2.8 lens is a breeze to carry compared to that. I can tote it around all day on the camera. This lens feels of high quality, looks great and takes photos with incredible detail. And ... fits in my camera bag. BTW: I purchased this same lens used from B&H, it had autofocus problems. B&H readily issued an RMA and allowed me to upgrade to a new-in-box lens for the difference in price. The new lens' autofocus is fantastic, silky smooth, fast, spot on and nearly noiseless. I use a Pentax K-3 body.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very solid and sharp lens I bought this for use with my Pentax K-5. The image quality is superior to telezooms I have owned previously. I have used it for children's football events, portraits and landscape fotography so far, and I am very pleased. I plan to use it for other outdoor sports such as cross country skiing and sailing. The solid build obviously means some weight, but it is worth it.
