Does this base fold up similar to the Impact base.?
Yes, and I actually like this stand better than the Impact base (despite the price difference). This one seems more sturdy than the Impact version in my opinion.

If I have a large light (like a 300d or a 120d) and I need it very close to the ground is there any reason I couldn't just put the light directly into this base?
It will work with the correct pin. I'd definitely sandbag it as it can be tippy with a large light like the 300D.

How sturdy is this item compared to the Kupo KS302011 universal floor stand? Does it hold items solidly / steadily or do they wobble around?
The Manfrotto backlight stand is rock steady! I have no experience with the Kupo item.

Could this be used as the base of a table where the top surface measures 36" x 16", a 20" tall double riser column (extended to 30") serves as the leg, and the entire load weighs about 15 lbs? Or would this idea be complete madness?
Hard to imagine it being stable enough...
