Allen & Heath ZED-428 Overview

The Allen & Heath ZED-28 is a 28-channel analog mixer offering versatile I/O and a user-friendly workflow for use in home and project studio recording, houses of worship, and live sound reinforcement. The 24 mono channels feature Neutrik XLR mic and 1/4" line inputs, DuoPre preamps with phantom power and bountiful gain, 1/4" insert points, and 4-band EQ with sweepable mids, while the two stereo channels have 1/4" inputs and 4-band EQ with fixed mids. All channels are equipped with long-throw 100mm faders, solo and mute buttons, and independent aux send knobs.

The six aux sends are ideal for routing to floor monitors and outboard time-based effects. A USB 1.1 port delivers 2-channel send and return capabilities via a Mac or Windows computer. There are stereo and mono main outputs in addition to four group outputs, two matrix outs, and two headphone outputs; multi-segment LED meters clearly indicate your group and main output levels. Patch additional stereo sources into the RCA stereo returns and 2-track input. The 2-track RCA output is handy for recording your mix to an external device such as a cassette deck or computer soundcard. The ZED-28 also boasts an external talkback mic input with an adjustable level and the ability to route the talkback signal to the first four aux's or to all main outputs.

24 Mono Inputs
There are 24 mono input channels with Neutrik connectors—XLR for balanced mic signals, and 1/4" for balanced/unbalanced line-level sources
Two Stereo Inputs
The two stereo input channels feature 1/4" connectors to accommodate stereo devices such as keyboards, synth modules, and external effects processors
Flexible EQ Section
Based on the acclaimed GL2400 EQ, all mono channels feature 4-band EQ with sweepable midrange bands, while the stereo channels offer 4-band EQ with fixed frequencies on all bands
Inserts
Inserts on all mono channels, the group outputs, and the main outputs provide easy integration of analog outboard gear such as hardware compressors and equalizers
Direct Outputs
1/4" direct outputs on all mono channels enable simple routing to a multi-track recorder
Independent Aux Sends
Six auxiliary sends—two pre-fader, two post-fader, and two switched pre- or post-fader— with independent level controls allow versatile signal routing to cue mixes, floor monitors, and external effects processors
4-Bus Group Outputs
Four group outputs can be used for easy control of submixes, or for applying signal processing such as compression to groups of signals using the group insert connectors
USB Connection
A USB 1.1 port allows direct connection to Mac and Windows computers for stereo audio I/O
Flexible Outputs
The ZED-428 offers balanced XLR main outputs (stereo and mono) with inserts, 1/4" and 3.5mm stereo headphone outputs, and two matrix outputs
Integrated Talkback Facilities
Connect an external mic to the XLR talkback mic input, then send it to the first four aux outputs or to all main outputs

Allen & Heath ZED-428 Reviews

Excellent Analog Mixer, intuitive layout, lots of flexibility

Our church replaced a similar mixer that was ~25 years old with this one. It was mostly a plug, configure, and use type of operation. The interface is easy for our continually-changing technical help, and the sound is CLEAN! Operation is smooth and predictable, and the separate MONO OUT is what we. use to feed the sanctuary, while the Group Outs feed the YT PC, ALS system, and so on.

i purchased a zed 428 used with no recording software. how can i get the software?
Asked by: radcliffe
Hi Radcliffe, Since SONAR/Cakewalk went out of business, we no longer include that software with our ZED consoles. The ZED will work with any other DAW, however.
