Profoto 100785 overview

  • 1Description

The Profoto Zoom Reflector 2 is a smoother, more accurate reflector, with an integrated grid holder that accepts Profoto grids directly -- no more need for the expensive extra grid holder.

The light from the new reflector is smoother yet more precise; the fall-off is more even, the dynamic range bigger, the stray light almost completely eliminated.

An optional protection cap -- the Zoom Cap -- fits on top of the reflector, even if it's holding a grid or if the reflector is mounted on a lamp head.

Zoom Reflector 2 is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 33.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Designed to make money off you Has all the benefits reported by others, but sorry Profoto, you don't get five stars for designing a product which only takes slightly non-standard size grids. You can buy a set of 4 grids from other brands for much less than a single Profoto grid. The Profoto grids aren't any better, but Profoto designs their reflectors to be slightly larger so that the other brands don't fit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great build If you tried the last generation of reflectors by Profoto, you'll enjoy this new level of quality. It's bigger (which can be a con, because standard sized grids will not fit in. You have to buy the grids for Zoom Reflector 2). As soon as you pick it up, you see the overall quality. I use it with a profoto B1. Light spread: 105 at position 10, 75 at position 7 and 35 at position 6.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from the logical progression Pros: Aside from the smoother falloff compared to the original zoom reflector and eliminating the donut-hole effect seen with the original at some positions, the new reflector takes grids without the hassle of a grid holder or barndoors. If you own the old Profoto grids for the zoom reflector barndoors, they will also fit on this reflector (7 grids do not fit, however). Cons: A little expensive, but for the convenience it's probably worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I am now a huge Profoto fan. This is a great addition to my pro photo collection. Now I would love to get one more of these. They're great for lighting a subject from behind and is even better when you have the grid to go along with it. These are nice and simple to use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much improved. I've used these reflectors when renting Profoto kits recently and loved the improved quality of light over the old style zoom reflector especially when used as a direct source of light. The light is crisper, more specular, and the output is about 1/2 stop brighter. So I was definitely happy when these reflectors came with my purchase of an Acute kit and saved me $400+ on trying to swap the old for the new. But even if they didn't, I would buy them anyway, because they're that good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent and versatile I have used this in outdoor bicycle racing at the Velodrome, in a cross-fit gym and in baseball (practice). This reflector proved to be the most useful and versatile across applications: a grid to spotlight indoors and open face for baseball. Both were fantastic.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I would buy this product again. I bought the Zoom Reflector 2 for my Profoto D1 kit. It works great, it's easy to use and even adds about a half stop more light to my subjects. I will probably get another one. Grids pop in easy. The only thing is you have to make sure to get the correct grid, the first one I bought was too small, I assumed all Profoto grids would be universal. My fault. Lastly, for the price, some sort of carrying case, would have been nice to get with it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Effective This is a solidly built reflector that zooms by sliding along the strobe's body so that the angle of light is modified. When the reflector is mounted near the business end of the strobe, the light spread is much narrower than when the reflector is mounted further down the strobe's body. This makes the reflector useful for outdoor work or for lighting a backdrop, because you can put the light where you need it. Your strobe seems more powerful and your light more dramatic when you have versatility in controlling light spread and aren't wasting light where it isn't wanted or needed. The reflector mounts onto B1/D1 series strobes using Profoto's usual Profoto snap lock, just like their speedring. For further light control, Profoto grids can be placed in this zoom reflector. They are held snugly with a spring clip on the grid's edge, and removable via a pull tab. The reflectors are nicely designed and well built, but shockingly expensive (minus 1 star). I wish Profoto made it easy to mount gels on B1/D1 strobes in some more elegant way than taping gels in place (minus a 2nd star).
