The Photek Softlighter II 36" Umbrella takes light from your strobe head or monolight, reflects it into its white, silver, or gold panel, then softens it again with a diffuser on its way out.

This ultra soft umbrella includes one each gold and silver light enhancing discs. These light modifiers can alter the color of your light or give it more sparkle and contrast, as well as increasing light output by a half stop.

This 36" size is perfect for a 1 person head shot, or 2x3 ft product setup. It will illuminate ~7 sq ft.

Unique construction consisting of ten panels instead of the usual eight gives more reflective surface, more perfect circle of light - more flattering catch lights in the subject's eyes.
The removable black nylon cover stops all stray and ricochet, enhancing total light control.
With removal of its black cover and a reversal of direction, the Softlighter II becomes a "softbox" -- a shoot-through diffuser, providing light that can be used either as a main light source or as a flattering fill.
Note: For mounting shoe mount flash units to the Softlighter II a shoe mount light stand/umbrella adapter is necessary. Shoe mount flash units must be set to Manual because the entire flash will be inside the umbrella (unless the flash unit is equipped with a remote sensor).
Note: For strobe use only -- not for use with hot lights, or modeling lights over 250 watts.

    Umbrella - Softlighter II - 36" is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 46.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good modifier; a little overpriced I bought this for use with an AlienBees strobe and a shoe flash. The cloth collar is too small to comfortably go around the housing of the AB. With a shoe flash, it's awkward to set up, though it does work. Using an umbrella bracket didn't solve the problem of placing the shoe flash (Canon 580EX II) in the correct position. Instead, I use a metal bracket and studs to place the shoe flash horizontally, so to keep the control panel and the remote sensor visible and accessible. The removable light diffuser works well, but I'm not sure how long it will last; it feels as it can break easily. I give it 3 stars because of the quality and overpriced tag.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Versatile and Great Value I use the Softlighter for portrait lighting with either an SB-600 or SB-800 light source operating with Nikon's remote wireless lighting system. The IR communication has NOT presented a problem even with the diffusion cover in place. This is a very versatile modifier and can be used as a reflector or shoot through umbrella and, with the diffuser in place, a very effective softbox. The removable shaft allows the Softlighter to be brought very close to the subject without fear of poking an eye out and provides a lovely broad soft light. My only criticism would be that the narrow shaft feels a bit flimsy and unstable when used outdoors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best umbrella ever! I specialize in portraiture on location and this umbrella is the best small light modifier I have ever used. It has a soft light quality that is easy to correctly position creating a lighting pattern easier to work with than a soft box but crisper than an umbrella. Material quality is very good and I really like the detachable shaft for storing the umbrella in a small space. The first time you use this umbrella it will take a moment of thinking to get the soft light panel on over your strobe but once you get the hang of setting it up, it is easy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Enlightening Upon recieving my Photek Softlighter I was egaer to put it to use. So I did, opened it, held it and scrutinized it! Its design was sleak, light weight and easy to understand. Mounted it on my mono light and fired away, enlightening with the results I quickly shared my results with my colegues.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth it I've heard some say that the Softlighter is overpriced. Sure, I'd like it to bea cheaper, but do I feel that I haven't gotten my monies worth? Absolutely not! Everything seems very well constructed and though I've only had this modifier for a short few weeks it has served me very well. I've used it in multiple conditions and lighting. It packs a large soft punch for its relatively small size, and packs up small enough that I can throw the whole thing in a bag. I'm certain that I will continue to be impressed by this guy, and find new ways to use it. Do it. Get it. You'll love it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Strobists dream Part of my strobist kit... If compact is your thing this works great for location portraiture. But if airline travel is important consider the 36 model because the 46 umbrella collapses to 30 making it tough to fit in a roller bag that meets specs for some airlines.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great on the Street! The larger softlighter is very popular among photographers on location, and in studios. I purchased this 3 ft. softlighter for work on-the-go, on the street, and it's size is perfect for street portraiture. Constructed out of the same materials as the larger softlighter, I imagine if I take care of it, it will hold up. Setup was fast on my ProFoto AcuteB2 heads. A perfect pair for portraits on the go!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Most versatile modifier This is the best value I have found today. It is a nice white umbrella with black backing, that comes with silver and gold disks to change the reflection characteristics. It also allows you to remove the black backing to make a shoot though umbrella. I has a nice case with it for storage. The best config is with the front diffuser, and the strobe firing back into the umbrella. Supersoft, controllable light. I use this with dual SB-800s, and the CLS IR works right through the thin diffuser with no problem. I also own the 60 version of the Softlighter, it is great also.
