Tokina AT-X M35 PRO DX Overview

  • 1Description

The Tokina 35mm f/2.8 AT-X M35 Pro DX Macro is a macro lens capable of life-sized (1:1) reproduction at an amazingly close 5.5" (14cm). Designed exclusively for use with digital SLR cameras that feature the smaller APS-C size sensor, this lens features a fast constant aperture of f/2.8, and provides a focal length equivalent to 52mm in 35mm format.

As part of the AT-X line, this lens is designed to provide excellent optical quality, and offers advanced features like the WR (Water Repellent) front element, its One-touch Focus Clutch Mechanism, and a 9-bladed aperture. The excellent lens for short closeup photography.

Note: Not suitable for 35mm film SLR cameras or digital camera with image sensor bigger than APS-C size

WR Coating
WR (Water Repellent) coating made of a special compound has been applied to the front surface of the lens through the use of a unique evaporation process. As a result, the lens offers excellent water- and oil-repellent performance and makes for easier cleaning should the lens be accidentally smeared with fingerprints or cosmetics.
One Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism
The One Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism allows for fast and easy switching between manual and auto focus from any position. This improvement means that it is not necessary to change the AF/MF switch (on the body with Nikon or the lens with Canon) every time the lens is changed from auto focus to manual focus mode.
9-Blade Aperture
The rounded diaphragm opening (9 blades) makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural.

Tokina AT-X M35 PRO DX Reviews

35mm f/2.8 AT-X M35 Pro DX Macro Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS Digital is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 44.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good lens, very good price this is a great lens for portraits and macro needs. the 2.8 f stop is great, and I get better quality images at high iso speed on my canon rebel with this lens then with my canon 28-135 lens which until now I used for everything. The construction seems pretty strong, every penny is worth well and beyond. The only thing that could have been better would be a faster autofocus, but not a terrible issue for me as I like doing everything manual. Worth of mention is the simple mechanism for switching between auto and manual focus,it doesn't have you looking on the side of the lens, you just push the ring back and forward.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cant believe they discontinued this This lens was out of stock for the longest time. All the possitive reviews were spot on. This lens is a great all around performer. At f2.8 center focus is very sharp falling off in the corners which is perfect for portraits. Background is nice and creamy. At f4.0 everything corner to corner is sharp. Background still nicely defocused. At f5.6 everything is in focus and sharp. Find it somewhere and buy it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Why The Secret After lots of searching for reviews on this lens and not finding much I decided I would just give it a try. I LOVE IT! Super sharp, and works awesome on my Canon 7D. I wanted a more all around lens that I could use for anything from Macro to Portraits and I have no doubts I found it in this lens! What a beast, worth every penny and then some not sure why more people haven't given this lens a try. I wanted something for vacation that was a great all around lens and I found it in a well kept secret. For someone looking for a great lens at a very affordable price look no further!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Lens for both portraits/macro This lens has exceeded all my expectations for what a 35 mm lens can do. With the f-stop at 2.8 and the ability for close up shots almost inside the lens casing, I am still exploring the possibilities. I have not seen a 35 mm prime that can do what this lens can do at this price. It looks great, is very durable and is the other half of my T1i almost all the time. If you are looking for a general and/or macro lens with a fixed aperture you need look no further.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great macro and normal lens! Picked this lens up from B&H a few weeks ago. I have to admit, hearing others say slow and noisy focus almost scarred me away. Glad I didn't listen to them:-) Consistently sharp, spot on focus (using it on a Canon 60D), bright, well built. I have used it for macro, landscapes and a few trial portraits. All have turned out fantastic! The slow and noisy focus that some complain about is a non issue. It is at best just a hair slower to focus than your top of the line L lenses and the noise is nothing to worry about. I highly recommend this lens!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tack sharp. Good city lens. I owned a Tokina 10 years ago, and though I could not find any fault with it (it was a prime wide angle) it also was not inspiring. This one, because th elenght on an APS-C gets close to the human eye perspective (50 mm) is a very good reporting lens. Very accurate and sharp and great as a video lens on a Canon 7D. The Macro 1:1 is a bonus I actually like the manual push ring. Strange at first but adjusted in 1 hour. I also own Canon 50mm 1.4 , Canon 60mm 2.8 and Canon 10-22mm and a Sigma 30mm 1.4. I find that it is in the same sharpness with the Canon 60 mm. I shoot directly as jpeg though. I find the Macro being better than a Canon 50mm 2.5 Macro lens (I onwed that one) So if you need a good, inconspicuous street lens with the added benefit of a spontaneous 1:1 MACRO, this is the one. I did not expect a lens this sharp for Canon mount in this price category.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another great tokina lens This prime approaches L series quality. Build quality is excellent. Sharpness is excellent wide open. AF is very accurate but slow when when focus switch is set to full. However, switch the focus limiter from full to limited (.55 feet 1:2 macro to infinity) and the lens focuses plenty fast for most situations. This is a great 50mm equivalent lens for a crop sensor canon like my 40D.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Value for Macro It's a shame this excellent lens has been discontinued. I bought this lens three years ago in June 2011 from B&H. I use it with Canon Rebel/T1i for macro photography of small items for sale on @ etc. I use a small light shed with two 20-watt quartz flood lights. I place the camera on a small tripod and use a Pearstone wired remote switch. I tend to use aperture priority at f/22 for maximum depth of focus. I set the camera at ISO 200. On the lens I push the focus ring in and focus manually. The resulting magnification and clarity of small objects is very impressive.
