While designed for use with movies, this filter can also be used for fashion and beauty applications. Unlike a traditional diffusion or soft focus filter, Pro-Mist filters provide little loss of detail across the image. Great for a subtile effect

Debated over the 1/4 vs 1/8. Went with the 1/8 as I didn't want it look overdone. Takes the videoish feel of some of the Sony Glass. Really happy with the filter.

Great

Thisfilter is great for blooming highlights however the effect was too strong for my liking. I wanted something that would bloom the highlights subtly without drastically altering the look of the image. I bought a 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 and decided to keep the 1/8. The other ones look good but it was just too much for me. Mainly using this on an 85 and 70-200. The 1/8 is exactly what I needed to give that extra glow without destroying the contrast and totally washing out the image.

This is the perfect way to make your lights really bloom subtlety without overpowering your image.

Good build and the 1/8 is the perfect size for my use case scenarios. It's also nice that the lens cap still fits when you have the filter screwed on.

Best filter I've used so far

B&H is probably the best and fastest local store in Canada (even if it's located in the US), so it's easy to get parts that over here, are missing. I love the Black Pro-Mist 1/8. It's subtle and just about right. Leaves no marks in the bokeh when using 70mm and above. I have two of these filters attached to my rehoused Leica-Rs (35 and 90mm) and they work like a charm. You can use them with any lens and will make the highlights bloom ever so slightly but still in a noticeable way. The effect is pleasing and delicate.

Industry standard and just the right amount of softness

Honestly, I'm not crazy about softening filters. I prefer a more subtle softening, especially with vintage lenses that already have a low contrast look. I barely use my 1/4 filter (way too heavy for my tastes) but the 1/8 is just right for most things. Every video shooter should have this in their bag, along with a polarizer and ND if your camera doesn't have internal filters. 18/ black pro mist is still a bit too soft for my Canon 70-200L 2.8 vs2 when running a low aperture, so I might try a more subtle filter like Tiffen Black Satin in the future for my long zoom lenses.

Great Filter for Some Added Dynamics

This is a great filter to add a slightly softer film look to your shots. The 1/8 has the perfect subtlety in my opinion. Well built filter with a great image. I would highly recommend this for anyones camera kit.

The sweet spot!

I had the 1/2 version of this filter but this amount is the perfect sweet spot without overdoing it.

This filter would accentuate the glare if anything. What you want is a polariser.

for shooting slog / flat profiles in 10bit, indoors/less than ideal lighting, would it make sense to get a weaker pro mist, like 1/8?
Asked by: Kevin
The pro mist filter is a filter and really does not have much to do with slog. If you want more of the pro most filter look you use a stronger one. If you do not you use less.

Tiffen does not specify a type of glass for either filter, so it's not possible to say if the glass is identical or not.

i use a uv filter for added lens protection on my lenses. would it make sense to remove the uv filter and leave the pro mist filter on, if i plan to keep the pro mist filter on anyway? (i'd imagine the less of a filter stack, there'd be less flaring issues
Asked by: Kevin
There is no reason to stack the filters. If you are shooting with the Pro Mist, remove the UV. If you arent shooting with the Pro Mist (or any other filter), keep the UV filter on for protection.
