    Blackmagic Design CONVMAAS2 Reviews

Mini Converter Analog to SDI is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 73.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from BEWARE LATENCY-NOT FOR LIVE BROADCAST I am using the product in conjunction with a Blackmagic mini converter SDI Up Down Cross, and (2) Blackmagic ATEM Television Studio switchers in a live environment. This combination was recommended by blackmagic support after problems with other mini AV converters. Here's the problem. The latency (delay) between IMAG video and live movement is upwards of 300ms. HUGE. Unacceptable. Not a problem if you aren't using in a live situation. Beware this brand, nothing is as advertised. Yes, they list some of the limitations of the product, but fail to point out glaring, major problems until you are trying to set the product up and having to call their support line.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better than the obvious competition This up converter is better than the competition because it has a built in TBC, which they don't advertise. I use it with a wireless video transmitter from Steadicam and it can receive an occasionally broken up signal and pass it through without locking up the computer I record on. Especially good if transferring old tapes for sentimental reasons. I only gave it 4 out 5 because like all Black Magic products it runs hot. On the flip side, it comes with it's own power adapter - unlike the competition. It also comes with an embarrassment of plugs from every continent in the world, which is just a bunch of landfill since few of us are globe trotting with our upconverters in tow, but hey, maybe you are that special someone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Flexible & Simple It works I connect the component output from my Canon XHA1 through the mini converter to the Blackmagic Hyperdeck shuttle. This allows me to record directly to hard drives and eliminates the time involved in tape capture. The quality is also improved. I have been using the Hyperdeck with my Canon XHG1 which has the SDI ouput. The converter allows the use with the A1 model. This speeds up workflow. Default setting were perfect for me and the ability to input digital or analog audio fits with my practice where I feed all cameras identical audio from a distribution amp while recording master audio on an Allen and Heath ICE 16.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Converter...function and price The embedded audio is nice, eliminating the need to run separate cables, as is necessary in other similar type brand converters. AND...for this convenience, you actually pay LESS than the competing brand's asking price. Oh,..and the power supply is ALSO included,..which is not the case with the other brand, which sells theirs separately. Most importantly perhaps though,..is the fact that this converter DOES convert from component analog HD to SDI (and/or) HD-SDI which is not immediately evident in the literature and listings. I bought the other brand first as a result of this misconception, and then later bought this Black Magic converter as well. Both perform the same basic conversion function, and work just fine, except that the Black Magic converter has the embedded audio capability, if you choose to utilize it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Handy! I had a job that required a transfer from VHS to DVD - The problem was that my modern editing gear has only SDI and HDMI inputs. The solution was the Blackmagic Mini Converter. It's affordable and works very well - allowing me to capture any analog composite, s-video or RGB signal and any analog or AES/EBU audio signal and convert it to SDI with embedded audio. The free downloadable control software allows the converter settings to be tweaked in real-time via a USB cable.I recommend this product if you have a need to interface old analog sources with you modern digital systems!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed with the video quality The converter works, and is easy to configure, but the SDI video output quality is noticeably inferior to the s-video analog input signal when viewed side-by-side. I tried various settings, including using the USB software, but there was no improvement. I attempted to contact BlackmagicDesign to see if there was something else that I could try, but they never responded to my e-mail. Avoid using this converter for critical applications.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Economy equalizer This converter along with my external record deck allowed my company to put off the expense of buying new cameras for probably several years. Our older HDV Canon cameras shoot great but the decks are wearing out, the tape transfer is costing us time, and they only have RGB for HD out. This product would have gotten 5 stars if 1. The universal power adaptor was not so flimsy (it seamed nice at first that it came with world adaptors but I would much prefer one country solidly built). 2. Battery power is available but the proper D-tap plug is not cheap.

    question

Which converter is adequated to edit analog video from an old Sony PVW- 2800 & Panasonic AJ-D440P to a MacBook pro Retina?
    Asked by: Anonymous
You would actually need a capture device, not a simple converter, to ingest the footage from analog sources. If your MacBook Pro Retina has a Thunderbolt Connection the Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Express would be a great choice, B&H #BLUSEXPRESS. It has breakout cables that offer Composite, Component and S-Video inputs for older analog sources.

    question

Converting analog to digital at camera, I have a long run back to production room. Dose this bust signal any?
    Asked by: Dennis
Once the signal is converted to SDI, the signal will not degrade within the supported length of the cable specification. The cable specification matters. The signal will not degrade, however, it would shut off if out of spec.

    question

anyone know if this is compatible with an ultrastudio mini recorder? need to convert N64 composite for streaming via OBS. Thx!

This may not work if the signal is not NTSC broadcast standard frequency. We do not have direct experience.

    question

are all the pins supposed to be up ?
    Asked by: dunster n.
I am guessing you mean the DIP Switches. These switches would be set according to how you want to run this converter. Some of the settings include Analog or AES audio and channel selection. The switch settings are listed on the back of the unit.

    question

Is there a way to go from VGA to BNC male for this? Would RGBHV work if I just didn't use the H & V cables?
    Asked by: Daniel B.
No, the converter will not accept RGBHV. I think your going to need an downconverter that has an HD-SDI output.

    question

I just bought this Analog to SDI,for Sony nxcam hxr-nx3/1 to BM ATEM. Can anyone help how to setup up?
    Asked by: San
On the side of the converter will be 8 switches. If you're simply going from component to SDI then flip the #5 switch down to the ON position.

    question

Will this convert PAL to HD-SDI? Im trying to capture video on the Epiphan Pearl which has HDMI and SDI inputs. Also, with there be any sync issues?
    Asked by: Scott G.
There is no Up Conversion in this mini converter. Feeding PAL analog, you will get PAL SD-SDI output.
