Metric Halo Mobile I/O 2882 overview

  • 1Description

The Mobile I/O 2882 from Metric Halo is a portable, high quality FireWire based, multi-format audio converter and interface. Housed in a single space rack-mount chassis, the unit provides 18 inputs and 20 outputs of simultaneous I/O, while having the ability to be powered entirely from the FireWire bus of a laptop computer or from an appropriate DC power source.

The unit is equipped with 8 microphone/balanced analog inputs, 2 channels of digital I/O (AES/EBU and S/PDIF), 8 channels of ADAT optical I/O and 8 balanced analog outputs. The first 4 microphone/line inputs are on XLR connectors, but all 8 inputs can provide +48V phantom power for condenser microphone use. Wordclock in/out and dual FireWire connectors, along with 24-bit, 96kHz converters on all channels, make this the perfect tool for digital recording.

On-board DSP powers the v.5 MIO Console that can function as a mixer, router and control application. The software can be used to route any input to any output, providing powerful and flexible mixing possibilities. A "Record Panel" allows for straight forward recording of incoming audio without the need for additional DAW software. This is particularly useful in situations where immediate editing is not required, but stable, fool-proof recording is.

The 2882 Expanded will function at a high level in a variety of applications. For studio recording, it offers sound processing or simple file transfer between workstations. For broadcast applications it offers instant playback of 2 individual stereo sends for music cues or sound effects. For live performance, in addition to operating as a remote recorder, or to play out backing tracks and musical cues, the interface provides live engineers a simple and efficient tool for analysis and system venue tuning using optional SpectraFoo software.

Metric Halo Mobile I/O 2882 reviews

Mobile I/O 2882 Expanded - FireWire Digital Audio Interface is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best interface around Every time I use the MIO 2882 I love it more. I use this in a professional capacity for studio recording and mixing. But this would be great for live use, taking the place of racks of gear. The sound quality is amazing, about as good as it gets. The internal mixer is fully configurable however you need it. There are multiple gain stages, so, once you really figure it out, you shouldn't have any trouble driving whatever output level you need. The effects are incredible, and genuinely useful. The preamps stand up well, not as good as my John Hardy M-1's, I wouldn't expect them to be, but, again, genuinely useful. There are numerous other great things. I actually haven't even tried some things like the built in recorder, but it looks very promising. The not so great things are few, and rather insignificant: The manual is now improved, but still not quite as good as I'd like, it's in HTML, which makes searching impossible. Initial Set-up is a bit time consuming, you have to watch the tutorial videos, and scour the manual, I'd suggest getting the older PDF manual for version 4, as it has mostly the same info in a better format. Also, you have to create the internal routing, though there are templates that are useful. This goes fast once you figure it out. The headphone level control is very noisy past 14dB. So, older cans like AKG 240M's which at 600 ohms are not going to get as loud as they need to be, well, not without a lot of hiss. This isn't as big an issue as it sounds, as there are numerous gain stages and things can be routed so that you get more gain to the cans without going the direct route. The clock is really pretty great, but my Lucid GENx192 beats it by quite a lot. There are a few other quirks, which are generally documented at Metric Halo's site. If you're serious about recording, this is the direction to take.
