Good plan but disappointing quality

We got this (General Biology) slide set as a gift to help a scientifically-motivated middle schooler to take advantage of a nice microscope kit, and presumably learn about basic principles of cells, anatomical structures, etc.This set *should* be perfect for that, as the list goes from single-cell organisms, to colonial creatures, to simple worms, on up to mammal tissues, bug parts, and several slides related to plants. Great idea, but most slides show some carelessness and some are just worthless.Virtually every slide has dust trapped under the cover slip. Some have multiple hairs or threads that are glaringly obvious, and should have been rejected if Konus had any genuine Quality Control. Apparently they don't.If there ever were single-cell animals on that slide, they were torn apart by the preparation process because there are no distinct organisms on the slide. Similarly, the hydra specimen has been torn. The bug head is torn and the mouth parts are in pieces. The bee legs are supposed to have full pollen sacs but don't. The muscle cells are hard to distinguish from each other. And in most slides where cell walls are visible, virtually no other structure can be seen other than the nucleus; no detail at all.The only plus is that most of the choices for this set are creatures or objects that are visible with a decent student microscope, i.e. they are not too tiny and there has been some effort to stain most specimens for viewing.But the dust and dirt are very distracting and make smaller specimens particularly hard to see. The stains do not appear to be selective enough to show different structures in one organism.It's handy to have the booklet with a list of slides, to help identify each one. The introductory text helps a little, but does not get terribly detailed. I happened to note that the English text in that booklet was more thorough and specific than the French version, however. I assume the same may be true of the many other languages included.For the price we paid here I'd hoped for a big step up from other slide sets, from other sources and for slightly less money, for which I had seen reviews mentioning dust. Well, these are dusty, too. The best part about this set is that Konus isolates slide groups according to the lesson involved, which is why I say the plan is good. Unfortunately, a few key slides in that plan are so worthless we won't ever look at them again.I guess the lesson is that it is hard -- maybe impossible -- to get a really good set of slides for study in this price range....
