Hoya XHD77CRPL overview

  • 1Description

The Hoya 77mm HD Circular Polarizer Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

This filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity and features a thin, aluminum-alloy filter ring that can be rotated to adjust the intensity of the polarization effect. To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, eight layers of anti-reflection multi-coatings are applied to the filter's glass. These coatings also offer greater protection to the filter substrate and help it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters.

Helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface.
Arranges, and filters, directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of the light.
Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.
Ideal for use with digital cameras and auto focus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features.
2x filter factor reduces exposure by 1 stop.
Constructed from optical glass for clarity and color fidelity.
Eight layers of anti-reflective multi-coating help prevent internal ghosting and reflections.
Thin and durable aluminum-alloy filter ring minimizes the potential for vignetting when used with wide-angle lenses.
Filter ring can be rotated to adjust the intensity of the polarization effect.
Plastic filter case for storage and transport.

    Hoya XHD77CRPL reviews

77mm HD Circular Polarizer Filter is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 88.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very well constructed, high quality The Hoya HD is very well constructed and with high quality. The rim is very thin and does not create extra vignetting (maybe a little for wide angle lens). The rotation of the rim is very smooth. Compare to my previous polarizer, it reduces about 1/2 stop of light loss, which is another plus. And the HD coating is so much easier to clean compare to Hoya Pro1D. In terms of the optical quality, I did not see any difference between this and a B+W MRC belongs to my friend. The only thing I am a little bit worried is the reliability of the filter, since there are some comments about the filter fell apart after some usage. But so far everything is good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful! The HD products are a very nice line of filters that have made their way to all my Canon L and Zeiss ZE lenses. The coating on this filter, as on the UV filters, seem almost indestructible. Not going to go test that theory any time soon. Seem to loose almost a stop which is not bad. Very nice build and its slim profile will works nicely with my 17-40. A cautionary note, on the super wide setting you gain density quickly towards the center. Not good. Inherent in most polarizers if I understand right. All said, I am very happy with this filter and may explore another size for my other lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Filter I purchased this filter to use on all of my lenses. I chose the HD version primarily because of the stronger glass that cuts out less light. Hopefully the stronger glass means the filter will last longer and/or take a severe impact to break, which will hopefully save the lens. Obviously this filter is not cheap. You have to decide what your price point is for filters and go from there. I justified it with the fact that it will probably last longer than any lens I own and I use it with all my lenses (through step-up rings). If you think about one filter working for all your lenses and the filter lasting longer than the lenses you own, the cost may be easier to swallow. It performs great. The quality is top-notch. I am glad I purchased it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as advertised I've waited a few months to write this review. I wanted to report real-world use. The thing I like is the combination of polarizing with UV filtering. I live over a mile above sea level, and I MUST have UV filtering, which most polarizers don't provide. I used to get annoying vignetting at my zoom's widest-angle setting because of having to stack filters. No more vignetting with this filter. It's a good filter, and I've had no problems with UV. Some folks complain that this filter is hard to remove. As someone who once lost a $200 polarizer over the edge of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, I WANT a filter that stays on!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful! Already using the Hoya HD filter series on all my lenses. Theses filters are beautifully machined and are of top quality. The coatings are optically flawless and very very durable. They require little in the way of cleaning, even after being in the tropics. Dust pretty much blows off them. Smudges? When they do appear, wipe away with little effort. Back to the polarizer. I have not had enough time yet with this little gem. It looks as if the results are going to be very nice once I have had some decent sunlight and subject matter to further test it on. Very Happy with this filter thus far.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from High Quality, Low Durability I've owned two of these filters and the optical quality is superb, 5 Stars. The downside of the filter, however, is serious and outweighs the quality in my opinion. I've purchased two of these filters because on the first one the two rings broke apart when I was shooting in Switzerland. The glass got scratched and the filter was ruined. I bought a second one because of the high glass quality and a year later the same thing happened and it was out of warranty (only 1 year). Added to this durability problem is the maddening issue of threading the filter onto a lens or UV filter. If you thread it to a snug fit, it's almost impossible to remove for some reason. It seems like the threads seize up with the receiving threads. This doesn't happen every time, but it is a serious problem. You're better off avoiding this filter and going with the B+W line (XS-Pro level).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Strong, high quality filter This is my second set of Hoya's 'HD' filters (I changed from 72mm to 77mm thread). I have abused the 72mm HD Pol filter so badly that the metal ring has dents in it; it still rotates perfectly, and the glass is unmarred. This includes dropping the filter directly on concrete. In addition to toughness, the image quality has been exceptional, and flare/reflections minimal even shooting with the sun in the frame. The filters are low profile as well, avoiding vignetting on wide angle lenses, in my personaly experience: the 17-40mm f4L USM vignettes at 17 with a regular filter, and does not with the HD filter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Polarizer Takes Blues Out of Vignetting I have had some difficulty using an existing circular polarizer. Intermittantly I would get corner vignetting. I purchased this product becuase of its thin and yet heavy construction and what I believed to be an appropriate price range for a polarizer. I have not been disappointed! On the contrary, this filter is durable and has solved my vignetting problem. It is always a joy to solve photographic problems with a reliable piece of equipment and Hoya has provided it with this filter.
