Audio-Technica AT4022 overview

  • 1Description

The AT4022 Omnidirectional Condenser Microphone from Audio-Technica features a low-profile design and a small-diaphragm condenser element. The microphone's sensitivity, frequency response, and SPL capabilities allow for use with speaker cabinets, vocals, percussion instruments, drums, and spot placement on guitars, and stringed instruments. The omnidirectional polar pattern provides a wide pickup area and preserves the integrity of the signal. An 80 Hz high-pass filter switch reduces low frequencies and associated noise, and a -10 dB Pad switch provides additional headroom and minimizes distortion when capturing transient (peaking) audio signals. The package includes microphone stand clamp, a windscreen, and a protective carrying case.

    Audio-Technica AT4022 reviews

AT4022 Omnidirectional Condenser Microphone is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Superb microphones for the price I must respond to the one star rating provided here, which is misleading. These are fantastic sounding omnidirectional microphones in almost every respect and with preparation, can be used for nature recording. Keep in mind they were not designed for environmental extremes that one would encounter outdoors. (Expensive RF type mics are designed for such use and are more reliable, but are three times the price.) The AT4022s are not unusually sensitive to humidity, to a point, but they will pop and fizzle in conditions with moisture condensation, particularly early mornings and evenings in the outdoors--typical for electrets. The upshot is, these must be warmed just prior to use with an inexpensive gel heat pack or heating pad. (The gel packs can be heated in a microwave oven.) I have a battery operated scarf that does the job, too. The microphones only need to be kept a degree or two above the ambient temperature to quiet them down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceeds my expectations Audio-Technica has achieved what I thought was not possible in a microphone at this price. It provides very accurate and clear reproduction of string and reed instruments with a robust signal/noise ratio. In fact, the self-noise is far below what I expected in this small diaphragm design.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Changed My Recording Life These microphones are superb. I do nature and location recordings and every chance I can take to use omni mics I take it. I upgraded to these from a cheaper pair and now I'll never look back. Not only do they have an amazing flat low-noise response, they also have great off-axis response and, so far, they've tolerated humidity and low temperatures (still above freezing) without any problems whatsoever. They are so natural and tansparent that you really don't have to worry about coloration, if you just focus on nailing your placement and location the mics will deliver. Omnidirectional mics in general are incredibly underrated and underused because people don't appreciate all the benefits they offer beyond just the polar pattern. Love these mics and I can't recommend them highly enough!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not suitable for field recording or got a bad batch Purchased 4 and 3 sputtered and popped during a 45F morning with low humidity. One seemed to work fine, seems like there must be manufacturing inconsistencies. B&H was amazing as usual, sent them back for a refund.
