Tamron SP 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 Di II Overview

  • 1Description

The Tamron SP AF10-24mm f/3.5 -4.5 Di II is an ultra wide-angle zoom lens. Di II means that is designed for exclusive use on digital SLR cameras with smaller-size imagers (APS-C/DX). Boasting a focal length range of 10 - 24mm, (the 35mm equivalent of 16mm to 37mm) this lens has a varied range of applications for creating dramatic images as it features both ultra-wide and semi-wide angle settings.

The close focusing capability of this lens enables image capture with an exaggerated perspective at the 10mm ultra wide-angle end or with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5 at the 24mm semi-wide-angle. It has Micro Motor to ensure precise and smooth auto focusing.

Note: Tamron SP AF10-24mm f/3.5 -4.5 Di II is not designed for conventional cameras or digital cameras with image sensors larger than 24mm x 16mm

Captures Ideal Range of Focal Lengths With D-SLRs
Since the size of 35mm film format is larger than the image sensor generally used in D-SLRs, a digital camera captures a narrower angle of view than a 35mm film camera even at the same focal length settings. This lens, made exclusively for digital SLR cameras, provides ideal focal lengths to cover the range desired by DSLR shooters.
Fits Smaller-Size Imagers
This lens is designed so the size of the lens' image circle matches that of smaller-size image sensors. In the compact design, it is almost comparable to a lens offering the same angles of view in 35mm film format. 1
Aspherical Lens Elements
The optical system within this zoom lens uses three large-aperture glass-molded aspherical lenses, as well as three hybrid aspherical lenses, which minimize spherical aberrations, coma, and distortion.
Minimum Focusing Distance Across Zoom Range
The close focusing capability of this lens enables the capturing images with an exaggerated perspective at the 10mm ultra wide-angle end or shoot with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5 at the 24mm semi-wide-angle setting with the freedom to create close-ups at the minimum focusing distance of 0.24m throughout the zoom range.

Tamron SP 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 Di II Reviews

SP AF 10-24mm f / 3.5-4.5 DI II Zoom Lens For Pentax DSLR Cameras is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 32.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great super-wide angle lens This 10-24mm lens saw immediate action on my Pentax K10D this December. Taking photos while fishing at a small mountain lake in Arizona, the lens behaved very well. I also used it for some candid, naturally-lit shots in an old musical instrument shop. I was pleased to find the lens correction parameters already available in LightRoom3 and Photoshop CS5 Extended (as of the 12/2010 updates). Pros: Image quality, build, candid photos (the angle is so wide, nobody knows you are photographing them, especially shooting from the hip), the price is right. Cons: None so far (it isn't perfect, but no lens is, and this lens offers high quality without being highly expensive).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Lens I purchased this lens to extend my range of focal lengths below that of my 18-55 zoom. I am still learning to use the short focal lengths, however the quality of the images obtained is excellent, and the lens is easy to use. I am quite happy with the pictures. I definitely reocmmend this lens if you want to take pictures in this focal length range. It is a nice addition to my lens collection, and my first non-Pentax lens. The lens is a bit clumsy to change due to the small length of the lens barrel between the zoom ring and the mount, although this may just be a function of this focal length lens in general. I would give the lens a 5, except that the first copy I received had an auto-focus problem. B&H promptly and graciously replaced the lens. I have had no mechanical or other problems with the replacement.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great ultra wide lense This is an excellent lense! I have been using it for about 7 months and it works great on my K-r. I added a B+H polarizer and my landscape shots are popping. I also use the lense for real estate shots and I can cover any room with this lense. Using my Pentax 360 attached flash with difuser down, I can take great shots with this lense. It is excellent and I have hand zero problems.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A most versatile ultra-wide I like to get low and close and this lens enables that. I've found it to be plenty sharp and, important to me, very resistant to flare-- even w/ a hard sun in the frame. I've owned the Pentax 12-24, very sharp, but it had a serious problem with flare. I have also owned the Sigma 10-20 EX f3.5 and though sharp, it's also big, heavy and doesn't have much reach on the long end (I did like the constant f3.5 aperture though). This Tamron really strikes a nice balance with zoom range, sharpness, size/weight, and cost. It's quickly becoming a favorite. It doesn't quite have the build quality of the other two, but I'm willing to overlook that for it's other virtues-- and build quality is still good. I would actually have liked to give it a 4.5 star rating w/ just a bit off for build quality but that's not an option. I love the zoom range, i.e. 15-36mm on my Pentax K-5 APS-C camera. This lens takes 77mm filters.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappoinment We take quite a lot of landscape pictures with our camera so we decided that wide-angle lens is a must-have. In this price range Tamron seemed a reasonable choice, a second candidate was Sigma 10-20 f4, but we were discouraged with reviews indicating huge randomness in quality. We did not expect top class image quality but rather just something decent for amateurs. Unfortunately, Tamron performance is very poor. Image is soft in the center and very blurry at edges. We could compare it at 18 mm with Pentax 18-55 kit lens and the latter gives sharper images. Moreover, the Tamron AF works well only for the long end, while for 10-16 range is decalibrated beyond K-r body adjustment. We could be unlucky with our copy, but we are sending it back and looking for some other lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens at a great price. I needed a new wide angle for stadium shots and landscape. My former wide angle, a Sigma 17-35, never clearly focused on the right side of the images for some reason. I already owned 2 other Tamron lenses for my Pentax K-5 and K-5 IIs bodies, a 28-75 f2.8 and a 70-200 f2.8. Tamron seems to be a perfect match with the Pentax bodies. Just like my other Tamron lenses, this 10-24mm is producing superb images. They are very clear and sharp for a wide angle and the auto focus motor is very quiet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice super wide angle for my Pentax! Not advanced but love to take all sorts of photos. I use this super wide angle for some landscape, street scene and architectural shots. For my real estate work, I usually need to get a fuller perspective on interiors and sometimes need to photograph exteriors standing close to subject. This lens is perfect my needs and the picture quality has been great and an excellent value! So far, I have found no need to use an external flash without a tripod, unless shooting indoors in low light/night since width of lens is naturally a problem when using camera's built-in flash due to positioning.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Optics, Well-Made Well-built, beautiful design, handles very well. Focusing ring has useful distance scale with good rotational feel. Produces vibrant colors and contrast, has excellent flare control. I live across a ship canal and see ocean-going vessels every day. Also take shots in botanical gardens.(Not really negatives, but just things to be aware of)Included petal-shaped lens hood very wide/big (though effective); 77mm thread makes it pricey to buy filters.

Does this lens work with my Pentax K-3?
    Asked by: Anonymous
I concur, using a K-500 the lens correction doesn't work. I love the quality of this lens, but one concern I have is that it doesn't focus as well as I would like at 'infinity'; I sometimes have to revert to manual focus in some situations.
