Tiffen 58ND9 Overview

  • 1Description

The Tiffen 58mm ND 0.9 Filter is a solid ND filter with an 8x filter factor that provides a 3-stop exposure reduction. Its 0.9 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

0.9 neutral density filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Providing a 3-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.
Filter does not affect coloration of the image and is ideal for use with other filters.
Front filter threads allow for use with other filters.
Plastic filter case for storage and transport.

    Tiffen 58ND9 Reviews

    58mm ND 0.9 Filter (3-Stop) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 54.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Fade over time when exposed to sunlight. I purchased six of these for use in long term time-lapse camera set-ups. Purchased US made as I expected high quality. Unfortunately these ND filters let me down. In the Australian sun they all began to fade. Firstly the outside blackened metal rings turned bronze, then extra light seemed to be reflected into the glass closest to the actual filter and this area started fading and turning green. The result was a darker area toward the center of the filters turning a greenish colour at the edges. The time-lapse pictures captured also started to gradually get a green colour caste. Not good!! Some cheaper filters from Japan had no such issues, in fact have had a couple in the field for over three years. So for short term use these maybe just fine. If however you intend to expose them to longer term light, such as long term time-lapse applications, then be wary. I would avoid anyway as they exhibit fading over time which is not helpful for consistent results.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not Great! I own a CANON XC15 Camera which has a built-in 0.9 (3 stop) ND Filter. ?But sometimes 3 stops isn't enough, so I purchased this Tiffen 58mm Neutral Density 0.9 Filter to use in combination with the built-in Filter. ?I opened the plastic case that contained the filter and found dirt & grime all over the lens. ?Fortunately, it wasn't scratched even after a little cleaning. ?So my immediate impression was not great. ?More importantly, image quality suffers using this ND Filter. ?The ND Filter that is built-in the camera works much better. ?But lets be serious... it cost less then $20.00 so I'm not too surprised.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from ND filter Got this for my 50 mm 1.4 lens so I can shoot wide open when there is just too much light, whether outdoors or in studio. Can be hard to focus indoor if not enough available light (when using studio strobes, otherwise you wouldnt need the filter)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from All you really need I used the neutral density filter for blurring water motion of waterfalls while on a vacation in California and Oregon. I didn't have bright sunlight too often, so I didn't get to know the full potential of the product, but it worked well when I did use it. I didn't have any issues with color hue changes as some articles on neutral density filters indicate can occur. Be aware of vignetting if using with other filters and of loosing too much light as with any neutral density filter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Shallow Depth of Field in Full Daylight. When shooting video in full daylight the only way to open up the aperture to get a shallow depth of field is to use ND filters. This does the job at a good price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best value in ND filters. Sharpness and image quality is great. Don't be concerned about that. Great value compared to B+W and other overpriced options. You'll never know the difference.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Filter I bought this filter to take pictures at the beach. Ocean pics and fountain pics turned out great. I would recommend this filter to a friend.
