Key Features
  • 2.0 Optical Density
  • Supports Temperature up to 122°F
  • Polyurethane Top Coat
This 6.6-stop, 3 x 3" Kodak #96 Wratten 2 Optical Gel ND Filter creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed without overexposing your image. By slowing your exposure time, you can create motion blur for special effects or to convey a sense of movement. Opening your iris allows you to create shallow depth of field, which can help isolate your subject. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

Kodak Wratten ND Filter Overview

This 6.6-stop, 3 x 3" Kodak #96 Wratten 2 Optical Gel ND Filter creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed without overexposing your image. By slowing your exposure time, you can create motion blur for special effects or to convey a sense of movement. Opening your iris allows you to create shallow depth of field, which can help isolate your subject. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

Kodak Wrattan 2 gelatin filters are more durable than the previous Wrattan series filters. This filter can withstand temperatures up to 122°F, and features a polyurethane top coat for increased usable life. When not in use, the filter should be stored flat and in a cool (78°F), dark, and low-humidity environment with less than 50% relative humidity.

Wratten 2 Improvements
More rigid/durable
Easier to handle
Color consistent today, and 6 months from now as well
Wratten 2 Optical Filters are less sensitive to humidity, less prone to static cling
Fingerprint removal is also easier
Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses
To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situations
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure
Neutral Density Factors
ND.3 (exposure adjustment = 1 stop, reduces ISO 1/2)
ND.6 (exposure adjustment = 2 stops, reduces ISO 1/4)
ND.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops, reduces ISO 1/8)
ND 1.8 (exposure adjustment = approx. 6 stops, transmits 1% of light,)
ND 3.0 (exposure adjustment = 10 stops, transmits 0.1% of light)
ND 4.0 (exposure adjustment = 13-2/3 stops, transmits 0.01% of light)
ND 6.0 = (exposure adjustment = approx. 20 stops)

Kodak Wratten ND Filter Reviews

Works great, but very expensive!

Gelatin filters are essential for 180 degree fisheye lenses, as you cannot put a filter of any kind over the front of the lens without it showing in the shot. Thankfully, Kodak still makes them. These filters are excellent and of the highest optical quality. The two downsides is that at $127 for a 3"x 3" filter they are very costly, but I assume that is because they are a rare item these days. The second issue is that Kodak doesn't make any filter between 1.0 and 2.0 ND, which in video can put you between a rock and a hard place with your T-stop!

Good filter but too expensive!

Hello:I have one of these 3 x 3 filters being shipped. I want to use it for my Canon 14mm L lens - which has a rear filter holder. Do I just simply trim the 3 x 3 with scissors so it fits into the filter holder? Thanks - Tom Oristian

Yes, you would simply need to trim the filter to fit the slot on the back of the Canon 14mm.

Does this fit my Sony FE 14 1.8 GM or 12-24 2.8 GM and does it require trimming?
Asked by: Terry
Yes, this would fit either of those lenses. This would need to be cut down. Both those lenses come with a filter cutting template that makes it easier to cut to size.

question

If proper care is taken, I'm just curious as to the longevity/ quality of these filters? Will they last more than 6 months? Many years?
Asked by: Todd M.
In our experience the main danger to longevity is water or solvent damage. The other issue would be if they become scratched. In a good clean environment I would expect you to get several years use.

Any chance someone has a template (or the measurements) for the interior dimensions of the slot? (ie, then trim to fit without wrinkling / fingerprinting the film)?
