Tiffen 4 x 4" Linear Polarizer Filter

BH #TIP44 • MFR #44POL
Tiffen 4 x 4" Linear Polarizer Filter
Key Features
  • Linear Polarizer Filter
  • 2.5x Filter Factor, +1.3 Stops
  • Helps to Eliminate Reflections and Glare
  • Reduces Haze in Landscapes
The Tiffen 4 x 4" Linear Polarizer Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

Tiffen Linear Polarizer Overview

A linear polarizer differs from a circular polarizer in that it does not contain an additional quarter wave plane. The addition of a quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, in-camera auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

This filter is recommended when not using in-camera exposure metering or autofocus. It is non-coated and delivers approximately 40% average light transmission.

Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology; a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch.

Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.

Since you are out of stock on the Tiffen 49mm Cir. Pol., can I use a linear polarizer instead on a mirrorless camera? My recollection is that Cir. Polarizer was developed to compensate for the effect of the mirror on light measurement in the camera, and if so, then shouldn’t be necessary for mirrorless camera.
Asked by: KTinUT
Yes, a linear polarizer will have no effect on metering or autofocus (PDAF or CAF) in a mirrorless camera, which historically would cause metering and autofocus issues in cameras with mirrors or single-translucent lenses (SLTs).

question

Hello,What is the difference between this product and the Tiffen 82mm Circular Polarizing Filter?Thank you,Nansen
Asked by: Anonymous
A linear polarizer only differs from a circular polarizer in that it does not contain a quarter wave plane that enables use of auto focus and exposure features. It is generally advised to not use linear polarizers with digital cameras, as digital SLRs are dependent on internal mechanisms to determine focus or metering.

question

Whats the difference between linear and circular polarizers? Im using a matte box with a rotatable 4x4 filter tray. Thanks.
Asked by: Paul
Both a linear polarizer and circular polarizer will give you similar results although a circular polarizer should be used on cameras with beam splitting metering systems commonly found on auto focus SLR's/DSLR's.

question

What range of sizes can this filter fit?
Asked by: Anonymous
This is a 77mm filter. It will fit any lens with a 77mm filter thread on the front of the lens. Tiffen does make this and many other filters in other sizes as well. Just do a search at B&G for Tiffen Filter . You'll see many types of filters in many sizes. I srongly recommend Tiffen filters -- the price is reasonable, yet the quality is very high.
