Not quite sure what to say about this. Extremely helpful when it comes to composing shots. Easy to swap out.

I had the comparable grid screen on my 40D. When I bought my 6D, I noticed I had to adjust the angle on practically every picture almost the same amount and direction. After shooting without it for a few weeks, I realized the grid screen on my 40D was more valuable than I thought. I bought one for my 6D (they’re not interchangeable between 40D and 6D) and problem solved. Even when I’m not consciously lining things up with the grid, I guess I’m doing it subconsciously. The lines are dark and thick enough to easily see them in all but the lowest light. And they’re light and thin enough to see past them when you want to. The price seems kind of steep for it, but it’s a great accessory so it’s easily worth it. That being said, it should be built into the camera itself. An earlier camera had a digital version of it that could be turned on and off whenever you wanted (I think 60D?). I got happy when I first saw that, thinking it would be on all cameras once they got updated. Somehow that didn’t happen which IMO is pretty stupid. But I’m not a camera designer, so what do I know?

I do a lot of copy work. The grid helps me square things up. I think the ones for the film cameras were better, but at least there is this option for some of Canon's DSLRs.

Works great in most situations

I wanted this focusing screen for compositional help with my ultrawide lens. It works good in most situations but if the scene gets really busy or certain lighting conditions it's hard to see the lines. Focus points still work the same. It's actually a real easy install as long as you take steps to ensure a dust free environment. Also a word of caution: make sure you're setting the focusing screen in the proper drop-down bracket. Also make sure you have a firm grip on it so it can be placed properly. Don't drop it on the mirror.

question

Is the Eg-d screen available for the 7D?

The Eg-D is not compatible with the 7D. The focusing screen in the Canon 7D is fixed, and is not designed to be user interchangeable. So, Canon does not make different focusing screens for the camera.

question

Does this focusing screen make the viewfinder darker? Or are the lines just harder to see in darker situations?
Asked by: Anonymous
No it does not. The lines are faint as they should be as to not interfere with your viewing but really assist with 'straightening' things up. I use indoors and outdoors.
