Bought this to protect my Nikon D300S with 70-200 lens for my trip to Patagonia. Worked perfectly, folded up nicely when not in use. I could have used a smaller version but figured better too big than too small. I just rolled up the sleeve and it worked fine.

Could I use this to block light so that I can see my screen better? In the winter, I can use my jacket but in the summer I don't have a jacket to toss over my head.

Yes, the Lightware RC110 Rain Cover would work for your stated usage needs. I am not sure how dark this rain cover is when under the cover, but it should be appropriate for your usage. If you are looking for an item that is designed for focusing needs to block light, the Harrison Silver Classic Dark Cloth - Small, B&H # HASDC, would also work for your needs. It has silver waterproof fabric on the outside and black cloth on the inside to eliminate reflections.
