Acratech GV2 overview

  • 1Description

The Acratech GV2 Ball Head/Gimbal Head is a sturdy, heavy duty, yet compact ball head that is similar in design to most conventional ball heads (unlike the unique Ultimate head). However, the GV2 model has been improved so that it can be locked down when the head is in the 90° orientation, which effectively turns this ball head into a gimbal-style head. This will now allow the camera to pivot around its center-point, gimbal style.

The GV2 features a low profile design, and sports all-rubber knurled knobs that are more comfortable to use, especially in extreme weather.

The built-in industry-standard Arca-Swiss style quick release clamp makes it compatible with the many different plates available from Arca-Swiss, Kirk, Wimberly, Really Right Stuff, Foba, Novoflex, etc. The clamp also feature a spring-loaded detent pin that projects into the pockets or windows that are cut into the bottom of most manufactures (Acratech, Kirk, Really Right Stuff, etc.) quick release plates. This detent pin will prevent the plate from accidentally sliding out in the event that the knob is partially loosened.

In addition, this model uses a "leveling" QR clamp, which features a large 15mm bulls-eye bubble level that extends out of the side of the clamp.

    Acratech GV2 reviews

    GV2 Ball Head/Gimbal Head is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 91.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb Ball Head I am a action sports / nature photographer. I just recently purchased the Acratech GV2 and couldn't be happier with it. Not only is it a fantastic looking piece of equipment, but the functionality is top notch. The action of the ball is silky smooth, and the knobs are all sturdy and tighten down with ease. I have yet yo experience any slippage of the clamp or ball even with my 70-200. The ball holds tight and strong. The weight of the ball is is great as well, and paired with a pair of carbon legs, I have not found it too heavy when trekking or riding with it on my camera pack. My only gripe is having to purchase the plate separately.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really nice I had a Manfrotto pan tilt head that did the work for a couple of years. I knew I had to buy a ball head even though I had never used one before. I can't compare this ball head to any other one out there but I did a good research before selecting one. At the end there were 3 brands I was considering. I ended up choosing the GV2 due to the Gimbal feature and the practically maintenance free. I find myself using the tripod much more now. It's so nice and easy to use. Setting up my camera for a shot with the previous head used to take some good time and I had to do many small adjustments. Not anymore. I will buy another one the day I get a second tripod.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Ballhead Very pleased with this new Ballhead which I purchased with a Manfrotto Carbon Fibre Tripod. First time I've used a Ballhead and it only took a few minutes to get used to - so much easier than having all those annoying handles. This ballhead is very precise and the knobs give you very accurate control. It's also a very cool looking bit of gear, which is good if you appreciate the engineering side.My only complaint would be that it doesn't come with a quick release plate, which I forgot to order. I'm sure there's plently of good reaons for this but for the cost of this item it should come with at least a basic QR Plate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heavy Quality & Precision However, the reason I purchased the Arcatech GV2 BallHead was for it's Gimbal function. The company's support & website information is far above par. Would highly recommend this product... and would imagine their other products to be of equal precision, reliability & appearance. I am a professional environmental photographer, and have used this product for only a couple of months, but have no complaints. The appearance of all my equipment is as important as function. This BallHead, and Arcatech's other product's suit my eye very well, which makes the using of equipment, enjoyable.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great mechanics and thoughtfully made This ball head looks and feels very professional. It looks really cool, too; Not that this is the most important feature. I am a landscape photographer, and this ball head provides me with everything needed to quickly set up for each shot. I especially like the positioning of the knobs, and their ease of use and solid feel. My one word of caution is to make sure the main knob is tightened before your shot. For some reason, it took me a couple of times to get used to the knob action, but after that it was all smooth sailing.Four stars, because I cannot verify how durable this head is; however this is a premium brand and the unit boasts an excellent 10-Year Manufacturer's Warranty

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrific Ball Head I matched my Acratech GV2 head with the Feisol CT3442 legs (5 star legs also) and could not be happier. This combination is light as a feather, quick to use and can handle good sized loads. I shoot landscapes, nature and portraits. My largest set-up is my D800 with grip, 70-200 f/2.8 VRII and TC20III. It can easily hold them and more. It locks tight and the tension knob is very effective. I love the features on the GV2. The gimbal feature is not a gimmick. Although not a dedicated gimbal head it works very well. The open ball design is fantastic also. It is very easy to keep clean and very smooth to operate. This head is awesome. Highly recommended!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Laght and pritty It is light and beautiful, I use it for landscape night, day and macro. It is easy to love this piece of engineering. I guess the rubber knobs will be great in winter, they feel very solid. I would say it has 2 buts: 1 When you tight it, it rotates right enough to readjust for macro photography. I do not see much problem on landscape. 2 The panning rotation it either rotates free or very tight, there is not a fluid in between. Not a problem, but this is something I notice when doing panoramas. Please note that the deterred pin does not work with giotto plates...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredibly engineered After thorough research of all of the top brands for a quality ballhead, and being utterly confused as to what I may have to sacrifice with one vs. another (and at that price, frankly, I did not want to sacrifice anything!), I 'stumbled' upon several reviews recommending the Acratech. To be honest, I had never heard of this brand, but the reviews sounded encouraging. Further research revealed to me that this head had exactly what I was looking for, even if it did 'look' unconventional. I have now put it through its paces and I am hooked at its smoothness of action, no movement at lock-down, and solid feel both in ballhead construction and knobs, but yet light as a feather. It looks and feels engineered, not just designed. Since it was comparable in price to the other 'top' brands, I believe that I did not have to sacrifice any of my 'must-haves' when I selected this model and brand.
