Sunpak RD2000 overview

  • 1Description

The Sunpak RD2000 Digital Flash is a compact and ultra-low profile flash, which fully supports TTL flash operation with digital SLR cameras. This version is dedicated to the Canon camera line, and fully supports their E-TTL / E-TTL II flash operating system.

The flash is powered by two AA batteries, which keeps it compact and lightweight. At the same time, it provides up to 200 flashes at full power. Following a low profile design, this flash barely extends 2" above the camera. It can also be used fully vertical, for ceiling bounced shots. Its light output can be adjusted with a range of +/-1 EV in 0.5 increments (5 settings).

When you are done shooting the shoe can be rotated into the body making it very convenient to carry around. The RD2000 is a handy flash that complements the compact design of digital SLR cameras.

    Sunpak RD2000 reviews

RD2000 Digital Flash for Canon Cameras is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 86.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great small and lightweight flash! I bought this small flash for its portability and ability to allow ceiling bounced shots. This flash is very light and compact and fits well atop my Canon G10. I also own the 420EX flash, but its size and weight makes the G10 difficult to hold and balance. It works great in full auto ETTL-II mode as well as in manual mode. Along with an external test button, it also has external EV buttons for quickly adjusting the power output (-1 to +1 in half stops). Power is a bit better than the built in flash, but its ability to tilt up to bounce for softer fill is what sets this flash apart. Overall, a great compact, affordable, and versatile piece of kit to have.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value for the price Very small and will fit in your pocket. I purchased it as a backup for my regular Canon flashes. As of April 2009, the firmware can be updated on older models by TOCAD America to enable it to work with a 5DMkII, which can have issues with non-Canon flashes. Their turn-around is very quick.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good starter flash This flash is great for its size and affordability. I bought this as my first flash add-on and i really didnt want a flash that was sitting 5-6 inches above the camera. I was looking for something simple, efficient and convenient. It's fold-up feature is extremely helpful as it can easily be slipped into a pocket. The built in flash diffuser helps but is certainly not ideal. The adjust-ability is minimal which is great for a first time (non built-in) flash user. This flash is ideal for travel and new users. It uses 2 AA's so power is easily available.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Small China Made Flash Works Well on 5D I bought this flash primarily because of it's small size and weight to bring with me when I travel. I use it mainly for fill flash (portraits) during the day which it performs well. Not sure how long it will last as it is * I have a much larger flash but it is too big to bring with me when traveling. I would rather have bought a Canon or Metz flash but they don't make a flash this small. I hope Canon adds a pop up flash to their future 5D camera models for added versatility eliminating the need to buy a flash such as this one. Nikon full frame cameras have them why not Canon?

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Simple, Compact, Works I am continuously looking for the smallest flash I can get away with - this is it so far, but to be honest, I went for it because the Canon 270EX II wasn't shipping yet. Of course, a week after the Sunpak arrived, the Canon started shipping! But the Sunpak does what I needed. Unfortunately, it isn't triggered by my Cactus wireless remotes, but I can now carry my 60D, the Sunpak, and a coil cord, and be able to handle and all day scenario with my kid. If we go into a museum or indoors, I can get shots without having to carry a large flash. I wish it had better manual controls, but like I said, I can get the shot now.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product, very compact Very compact, love that the shoe folds flat and can bounce. Overall good product. I like the EV +- correction with just a push of a button and no need to go into camera menus. I did find that I had to keep mine on the + EV all the time to get correct exposures and that's why I took a star off the rating. I am satsified with the exposure consistency. The recycling time and power output are much lower than compared to a 4 battery flash. If you're only going to be shooting a few flash pictures at close range and don't want to carry a big flash and want the convenience of TTL-2 this flash is for you. This flash worked fine on my 20D but did not work on my old first generation Canon Digital Rebel which only has TTL-1.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great small Flash Unit Unit worked as advertised. Mounting simple and secure. You would need to work at it to make it break. Battery compartment a little tricky to open but not really a problem. Various flash settings useful. Does the trick for a small, easily portable fill-in flash with 5DII. Much more reasonably priced than Canon.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Limited compatibility with EOS-M Solid little flash, worked on most of my cameras with the exception of the one I wanted to use it for, the EOS-M. If all you want is full auto on P mode with auto ISO, the RD2000c works with the EOS-M. Any straying from auto everything initiates a full powered flash and a washed out image. I contacted Sunpak and was told the EOS-M is not support, and there are no plans to add it. If you do not have an EOS-M, this is a pretty great little flash unlike anything on the market.
