A classic focal length and a classic design, the Canon EF-mount Planar T* 50mm f/1.4 ZE from ZEISS is a normal-length prime ideal for working with most subjects. Its bright f/1.4 maximum aperture excels in low-light conditions and also offers greater control over depth of field for using selective focus. The Planar type optical concept is a tried-and-true design that yields consistently high sharpness throughout the focusing range with even illumination throughout the aperture range. Also, a T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to individual elements to control lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy.

Normal-length prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide an 80mm equivalent focal length.
Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture affords extensive control over depth of field for achieving selective focus effects and also benefits working in low-light conditions.
Planar optical design affords high sharpness and consistent performance throughout the focusing range to suit photographing at a wide range of imaging scales.
ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections and provide greater contrast and color fidelity.
Manual focus design enables a minimum focusing distance of 1.5'.
All-metal lens barrel and mount offers high durability and rigidity.
A nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when working with selective focus techniques.

Normal 50mm f/1.4 ZE Planar T* Manual Focus Lens for Canon EOS Cameras is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 183.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens for the price This is an amazing lens. I have been shooting with it for about a month know and grab it just as much or more than every other lens in my bag. It is way sharper than any of my zoom lens (of course) and out performs and of the canon 50mm. I have been debating getting a Canon Eg-S Super Precision Matte Focusing Screen. I think it would help with manual focusing. But really if you are shooting at 1.4 I just do a little focus bracketing and I'm usually good.Little to no chromatic aberration. Built twice as solid as you would ever imagine. Really this thing is sweet!I have been shooting with it a bunch if you want to check out samples at my site @ May of the images on my blog are with this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Outstanding Lens This lens is not for you if your intend to take pictures of news paper and test patterns, view you photos at 200% to examine pixels, and are primarily interested in collecting equipment. If however you are interested in spectacular photographs that have dynamic color, contract and near 3D imagery then this is for you. I have the 35 2.0 and 85 1.4 and they all deliver a natural color and presents that is extraordinary. When one looks holistically at the photo produced by these lenses (if one can separate oneself from the singular measure of sharp)they will see a vivid and realistic reflection of what was photographed. They are truly outstanding.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tired of color correcting??? I have been looking forward to this lens... I have two 5Ds. I put my Ziess 50mm 1.4 on one and my Canon 35mm 1.4 (highly recommended ) on the other and I am set!!! I was an artist before I became a photographer and the trueness of the image this lens produces are very noticeable to a trained eye. Your customer will notice it also , but may not be able to pinpoint it. In my eyes this is what makes it a professional lens. *This lens will save you lots of time color correcting. *The manual focus ring is smooth and silky.(Much better then any AF lens) The Zeiss 85mm 1.4 looks pretty nice too....hmmm

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love Love Love I received this lens back in November. It has become my main lens and rarely comes off my camera. At first I was a little nervous about the manual focus, but I even use this lens when I am photographing infants and small children. I love the creamy quality when shooting around 2.8. It is the perfect portrait lens. It beautifully captures my images. It is an added bonus that it is so light. It almost feels as though I do not have a lens on my camera at all! My only difficult is with focus below 2.8, but that has more to do with my right eye than with the lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gorgeous image-f1.4 video/f2.8 stills I've used this lens for about a month and am impressed with the huge step up in image quality from other lenses I've shot. As other reviewers mention this lens cannot shoot sharp still images wide open. In my tests with video, however, I find the shooting with aperture f/1.4 more forgiving and would gladly trade off some diminished sharpness for less noise produced by shooting at higher ISO in low light. For professionals and if cost is not an issue, the 50 L 1.2 is twice as much and arguably not much better for stills. For me, the image quality and color are a huge improvement from the canon 50mm f/1.4 that I had used previously. The lens exceeded my expectations for still and video usage for a lens of this price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens, just give it couple months before you give it up I would consider myself a beginner photographer and I love this lens. For some reason, I saw so many good reviews about this lens, hence went ahead and bought it. First two weeks; horrible. I couldn't focus a single picture correctly, Second week, not so great, got about 10 good ones out of 100 pictures taken. Now its been about 3 months I own it, and last week only, I deleted 9 pictures out of 435 I took in a graduation. You get so used to this lens that you will know right when its a perfect shot. Beyond that, it will blink red when you have perfect focus if you press the shutter release by half. Absolutely love this product, I even wanted to get rid of it because it was so expensive but now I don't know what I will do without it. I sold my 70-300 mm and 18-55 mm because I haven't used them ever since I got this. If there is one lens, which will meet all your requirements, it is this. Its a BUY BUY BUY!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really amazing lens Lovely sharp image even wide open. The way it blurs the skin is amazing and rather than blur it's more like a skin softener right out of the lens. And the bokeh.... Oh, it's amazing. Great minimum distance as well. Built like a tank, the only plastic on it is the lens cap. The focus confirmation isn't always great but I use it for video and when I do take photos with it I use the live view 10x zoom so it doesn't matter. Would recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I'm glad I bought this lens I read alot of reviews that give mixed signals about this lens; ranging from not sharp wide open to being difficult to focus. My experince with this lens has produced very sharp images wide open @ F1.4 with a Canon 5Dii. Focus maybe confused with depth of field for some folks saying the focus is soft but the lens is easy to focus manually and requires a bit of understanding how DOF works. This is particularly true when using F1.4. That said I use this lens with my Zeiss 100mm F2.8 Makro-Plannar and it's a great walk about kit. I started to buy the 50mm F2.8 Makro-Plannar because of the nay sayers. I'm glad I bought this lens because it's lightweight, smaller footprint and cost a few dollars less.
