The D1 Air 500W/s Monolight is a significant refinement of the ComPact monolight series from the company which having become synonymous with professional strobe lighting, is now celebrating its 40th anniversary.

No stone has been left unturned in the provision of tech and convenience features that seem to derive from professional photographers' wish lists. The sleek matte-black, high-impact polycarbonate finish encases strobe design that goes beyond the highly visible LED readout and is digital from the ground up. The 7 stop power range breaks down to 1/10 stop increments providing flexibility, precision and consistency, made possible by dual mode SMPS capacitor charging.

A new built-in 77 degree reflector (5.12" diameter) maximizes case space and is ideal for umbrella and softbox use. Features that we've come to expect from Profoto over the years: short flash duration, rapid recycling, a bright 300W modeling lamp and heavy-duty cabling are all on-board.

Profoto Air System technology replaces the sync cord, allowing the head to be remotely triggered from as much as 300 meters (1000 feet) away using a Profoto Air Remote or Air Sync transceiver (sold separately). The Air Sync provides wireless triggering (8 channels) via hot shoe or mini plug, while the Air Remote provides wireless triggering as well as full-function head control over 8 channels in 6 distinct groups. Additionally, the D1 Air's syncing and complete functionality can be wirelessly controlled via your PC or Mac by using Profoto's optional Air USB with the included Studio software.

Modeling lamp operation is user-selectable: On/Off/Proportional and Free (manual). There is also a selectable flash confirmation (dimming) feature in addition to an audible, fully-recycled tone. The D1 is compatible with the full line of widely-acclaimed Profoto light-shaping tools. Finally, the self-sensing multi-voltage circuitry allows you to take the D1 anywhere in the world.

High-visibility LED readout with 7 stop range in precise 1/10th stop increments
Rapid recycling (0.2 - 0.95 sec @ 120V, 0.2 - 0.95 sec. @ 230V) insures that fleeting gestures and defining moments are caught, not lost
The 300W modeling lamp meets the challenge posed by a high ambient light level on set provides easy pre-visualization of the final shot
Air System technology makes the sync cord obsolete, allowing remote triggering of your D1 from as much as 1,000' (300 m) away. Alternately, the D1 Air's syncing and complete functionality can be wirelessly controlled via your PC or Mac by using Profoto's optional Air USB and the included Studio software
Lightweight design with durable polycarbonate shell and built-in 77 degree umbrella reflector
Self-sensing multi-voltage capability allows you to take the renowned Profoto quality of light anywhere in the world
Super-short flash duration (1/1,000 - 1/2,600 Sec. t0.5) provides crisp, action-stopping images, and is especially valuable for dance, sports and other highly kinetic subjects
Connect the D1 to the optional Profoto Air USB for PC and Mac for full control of your entire studio flash system via wireless communication
Highly consistent shot-to-shot performance within a +/- 0.05 stop range via dual-mode SMPS capacitor technology
Safety features include auto-diagnostic start-up circuitry, DDP (Deep Discharge Protection), pulse-charging capacitor circuitry temperature control and overload protection
Fully compatible with the extensive line of renowned Profoto light shaping tools

Note:D1 Air models require use of a Profoto Air remote or Profoto Air Sync for triggering of the strobe from the camera

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's the D1...Enough Said! There really aren't enough good things to be said about the D1 unit. It gives you very consistent output shot after shot, it has never failed me once. One of the thing I love most about the D1 units is the modeling light. I've actually done shoots using only the modeling light it's less light than the lowest strobe setting, which lets me shoot a wide open aperture if that's what I'm going for. The modeling light has a fan which means it's self-cooled, which means you can run the light indefinitely. My other strobe modeling lights will burn out after a few minutes. Just spend the moneyit's a great light, and you'll love the results you get from it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Nice light but.... Nice light but headache . I use a 5' Profoto Octa RFi and the unit can't hold the weight of this particular light modifier , no matter how much I tightened the knob . I contacted Profoto and I was suggested to move the all modifier in the back of the light and by doing so only the half of the reflective surface was illuminated and results...different light shape since the light itself is build in reflector and the face light was exeding out from the speedring . By contacting B&H Professional Lighting Department I was informed this particular line has this issue while using this large modifiers so I had to return it..!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Mono light stobes made. Profoto mono lights are the best made. Combine the mono light with the air remote and you have total wireless control. As a professional photographer I only go with the best. I use the lights in studio only. With an octabank or soft box the quality of light is amazing. Even with just the straight head, with built in reflector you can tell the color temperature never changes and the quality of light is outstanding. Recycle time is key with this model. Pair this light with a quality light modifier and the air system and you have it made.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Color consistency not so great After purchasing this set and reading all of the glowing reviews I am very disappointed in the color consistency of these strobes. Upon receipt I ran a test and discovered that the strobes fluctuated from around 6100 K at full power to around 5500K at low power, exact numbers were: Head A - 10-6160K 9-5950K 8-5790K 7-5700K 6-5700K 5-5600K 4-5490K Head B - 10-6080K 9-5940K 8-5770K 7-5750K 6-5740K 5-5620K 4-5540K I sent the heads in for repair, thinking perhaps I had received a bad set and was told by repair that much color variance, 600 K, is within specs. I was told that with the B1 strobes are more consistent in normal mode, and the allowable fluctuation is 150 K from full to low power. So I suppose the D1s are nice strobes but be sure to bring your color meter and gels if color accuracy is much of a concern. I haven't had them long enough to know how they will hold up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible levels of control I am loving the new Profoto D1 Air units. The ability to control the power of the heads in 10th stop or full stop increments has been incredible. For those that light ballrooms at weddings, like we do, this is incredibly useful. The modeling lamps are also great for DSLR video in some situations, and again, the ability to control the power of the the modeling lamps from the camera is also very helpful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from High Quality Light I own strobes from several manufacturers including Elinchrom, Photogenic, and Paul Buff. Quality of both the construction and the Light in the Profoto can only be equaled or perhaps even surpassed, by Broncolor. IMHO, Profoto is head and shoulders above Elinchrom.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another great light added to my studio Very well made with consistent output. The modeling light is strong enough to be used without the flash tube (in my case for glamor photography) by simply bumping up your ISO. I am still awaiting my air remote transceiver but have used them in the past and anticipate that it will simply increase functionality. Software does not yet appear to be compatible with Mac OS 10.7 and because it is Profoto it is somewhat expensive especially the various reflector grids but still very satisfied with the light.
