The military-specification Newcon Optik 7x50 AN Binoculars are favored by special operations and law enforcement units because of their reticle and compass functions, but they also make good boating binoculars. They are no-nonsense and utilitarian, 7x full-size; that's stocky and easy to hold. And with 7x50 Porro prisms with extreme depth of field and center focusing, they are a decidedly rare combination. Not a serious optic. Poorly constructed.
I would send it back if I could. NEVER again on a closeout deal... Reticle is fuzzy, compass window blacking isn't very black, significant light leaks through compass cause right-tube contrast loss. Eyepiece/ocular final element is recessed ~15mm from the outer edge, which takes up ~15mm of eye relief! This is not the rubber cup, this is a plastic tube not removable or deformable by pressing the cup harder into the face. This one design choice completely negates the point of long eye relief optics. Strange, but that's what Newcon did. The eye cup tore as soon as I tried to remove it -- weaker than residential door weatherstripping. There is something wrong with the material, as it looks like rubber but tears like a pencil eraser. I guess EPDM was too much to ask for. The outer rubber housing is some kind of high-solids PVC that manages to slide around in both bare hands and in gloves. Between the shape/size and the eggshell-like texturing filler of the PVC, this binocular is very difficult to hold on to. The cover is also not overmolded but is a boot, so liquid, hand oil, etc. will wick between the housing and the outer cover and remain. The housings are plastic, and each tube is made in two pieces. The pieces are held together by two screws near the hinge and a bead of terrible silicone sealant. This allows the objective to move relative to the prisms as the tube gets handled. I can shift the objective section against the main body with just my fingers. Being just silicone sealant, the optical arrangement will never stay aligned. In addition, the silicone sealant was brushed onto only the external surface. There is no way this thing would be actually moisture tight for very long. A proper cement would have cured the shifting problem as well as be watertight. The compass was also silicone sealed in place. The two screws were not actually long enough to engage the screw boss. Silicone was the only thing holding the compass in place. This is seriously haphazard assembly. There are a number of extra openings to the right tube for the compass that are not covered by anything but the compass. This may contribute to the noticeably reduced contrast of the right tube. I bought these expecting to remove the reticle and compass at some point. As soon as the eye cup tore while inspecting, I knew I messed up. This is not a serious optic and has very major manufacturing problems.
