Its a release cable. I use it with my PocketWizards to remote click the shutter on my Pentax K3 / K5. It works its coiled, and I expect it will last just fine.

Does this cable have the same size connection plug on both ends? It appears in the photo that one end is 3.5mm (1/8 ) and the other end is a smaller 2.5mm sub-mini.

Yes, mine is an Impact Camera Release Cable. 3.5 Mini to 2.5mm sub mini connection. Works well on my Pentax K5IIs to fire my camera remotely with a pocket wizard, but won't fire my flash. Hope this helps
