The Celestron #94223 Polar Axis Finderscope is a battery-free (non-illuminated) polar alignment aid with an 18mm clear aperture made exclusively for Celestron's CG-4 and Omni series German-type equatorial mounts.  It doesn't work for the CG-5.  This finderscope's patterned reticle allows you to fairly easily obtain exact polar alignment in both northern and southern hemispheres, and threads into the rear of the polar axis of your mount after removing the black ring (with three chrome thumbscrews) from the mount.

Instead of using the 3 exposed chrome screws to align finder/mount, this newer version uses 3 setscrews in its body to accurately align with the scope's rotational axis.  The newer screws are recessed a bit, helping to prevent their damage.

You only aligning this finderscope to your mount's axis of rotation once, and it just takes a moment or two and can be done in daylight.  After that you leave it installed within the mount.

After being aligned to your mount, in the northern hemisphere you place the mount in such a fashion as to align with the finderscope's patterns representing the Big Dipper, Cassiopeia, and Polaris.  A little target circle represents the acceptable range for Polaris' location within the finderscope's view, and after you get that set up you can expect pretty good results from longer exposures.

The technique's much the same for use in the southern hemisphere, except that Octans is used as the guide constellation.

Non-illuminated design free from batteries
Clear aperture of 18mm
Newly-designed screws prohibit damage during transit
Need only be aligned to mount once, and thereafter is left within mount's body
Exclusively for use upon CG-4 and Omni mounts

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smart buy on this one Using my mount without a polar finder scope was getting pretty tiring. Hit or miss was the best I could do with miss winning out. Now, I feel like time spent using the right tool is productive time. I can set up for the entire night of star gazing and setting up correctly in less than half the time spent doing it wrong. The polar scope gets me right on, and makes me feel like an astoronomer extraordinaire. Thanks for having this in stock, glmino

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Much needed accessory This polar axis finder is a required buy for the CG-4 mount if you want to track a target. Good polar alignment is essential for precise tracking and this finder scope gets you there. The instructions for aligning it with the mount's mechanical axis is adequate for the mechanically inclined but might be a little lacking for someone unfamiliar with tools. Follow the directions and you'll get there.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great! This is one good scope that helps a lot while aligning the mount. The price is very attractive as well!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Your results may vary My older CG 4 has a slightly smaller tube for mounting the polar scope than the newer ones must have. As a result, I've had to hone out the tube to install the scope. Still not sure I'll be able to make this fit, but early results are encouraging. (The scope can now slide in more than half way. The scope itself looks nice and should work just fine if you have a mounting tube that's big enough to hold it.
