Voigtlander BA212M overview

  • 1Description

Realizing a truly wide perspective, the Super Wide-Heliar 15mm f/4.5 Aspherical II Lens from Voigtlander features an updated design from the original screw-mount version of this lens, making it now directly compatible with M-mount rangefinder cameras. The eight elements, six groups optical design incorporates one rear aspherical element to control chromatic aberrations and minimize distortion for notable sharpness and clarity throughout the aperture range. The manual focus design affords a minimum focusing distance of 1.6', which pairs with the wide depth of field for sharp imaging from near to far. Rounding out this versatile, super-wide optic is an integrated lens hood to reduce lens flare and ghosting, a 10-blade diaphragm, and the ability to accept 52mm screw-in filters.

One aspherical element helps to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortion.
Manual focus design enables a minimum focusing distance of 1.6', and it is rangefinder coupled for accurate focusing to 2.3'.
Built-in, non-removable lens hood helps to prevent lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color fidelity when working in strongly lit conditions.

    Voigtlander BA212M reviews

Super Wide-Heliar 15mm f/4.5 Aspherical II Lens is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not for the M9 This product was purchased with the intention of using it with my Leica M9. For whatever reason, this lens cannot be used with the M9. The short edges of the frame show a red haze, which is not corrected with the Leica 16mm profile. In addition, more red haze on one side indicates an alignment issue. The red haze issue is not apparent when working in black & white. Even if you crop to the equivalent of a 20mm lens field, sharpness is nothing to brag about at the apertures I tried; f/8 and f/11. I took advantage of B&H 30 day return policy; which makes them a wonderful supplier to do business with.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Sharp & straight but so-so w/ Sony A7 Purchased for scientific work and paired with Metabones Leica M adaptor to Sony A7 cameras. Nice sharp lens at all f-stops, incredible depth of field at f8 and above. Rectilinear as advertised with straight lines staying straight along edges of frame. As noted in other reviews, there is a serious compatibility issue with this lens and some full-frame sensors due to interaction with the short rear flange distance on the Leica-M mount. This is particularly noticeable on Sony ILCE A7 and A7R. On the A7R, I measured 2.5 stops difference between center and corners. In addition, there is a very-difficult-to-correct color shift (magenta left and right; yellow top; red bottom, as well as decreasing saturation.) Bottom line: I would not recommend this lens on the A7R or A7 for color landscape photography. On the A7S, with 12MB sensor, the problem is less noticeable, with less color shift and only about 1.5 stops of vignetting. Overall, I would highly recommend testing this lens before purchasing if planning to put in on any full-frame digital camera.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Voigtlander Super Wide Is a New Adventur For almost a year now, I have shot my M8 exclusively with the 50mm Summicron, and it has been great. However, I wanted the ability to go in new directions, and a 15mm lens seemed to fill the bill. The Voigtlander 15mm was highly regarded, so I took the plunge. After just two weeks I am sold. Originally I planned to use the lens in urban settings, working with industrial shapes, but I found it opened a new world in scenics, two. The lens is pretty sharp (remember, I'm spoiled by the Leica 50), very compact, and extremely well built. The one aspect that kept it from 5 stars is the color rendition, but, there again, I am totally spoiled by my 50 which is a color and contrast superstar. I love the lens. Buy it - you will too.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good lens I used this lens on Nex-5n. The color/contrast is very nice and I love it. But the sharpness is not a wow as compared to sigma 19mm. I just don't see much difference in the sharpness that would justify the $450 difference. I am happier with the pictures taken with sigma 19mm at this time. So I returned this lens and keep the sigma 19mm. When using this lens on Nex-5n with peaking feature, the DOF is so deep and it's hard to identify the in-focus subject, many times resulting the pictures that is not as sharp as the one from sigma 19mm. Using peaking indicator, I thought the subject is in focus, but it's not (produce non-sharp picture). The lens looks so cute on Nex5, I may own it again in the future.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A great lens for the Sony Nex cameras Bought this lens to use with my Sony Nex 5n, and have already seen some great results. First, the small size of the lens is perfect for the camera; the aperture and focus rings work nicely; and even with the 1.5 crop of the sensor, the lens still works at a 22mm wide angle. Had been using a Leica 28mm lens, but this is now my first choice lens for this camera. I'm very pleased with this buy, and the purchase from B&H was without flaw.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent, easy to use, fun lens The ultra wide-angle on an M9 is simple to focus and the DOF is huge and focusing can be set from reading the markings on the lens barrel and setting up a huge focus range. Excellent quality, small and portable, simple focus, and reasonably cheap.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A legendary wide angle lens This lens is a revolution. Many people thought of a wide angle lens as having too much distortion. This lens changed the conception of a very wide angle lens. It is especially excellent for interior photography. The negative is the slow f stop but if there is no motion this lens delivers astonishing images in this venu. I have used this lens for over a year and have one body with 15mm viewfinder that it is almost glued to. The photogaphs are contrasty and very sharp. One must keep people out of the extreme edges as then you wil be bothered by the distortion. Otherwise it is a great lens because it is small. light. fits the newest M9 and even works OK with the auto metering. Sometimes I adjust the meter to open up a little but this depends on the location and situation. The price is the real suprise. How do thy do this? My friends here in South Korea are always suprised at the photographs taken with this lens. It is especially a good travel companion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super Wide and Impossibly Sharp Recently changed my kit to a Sony NEX 5N. Even with the 1.5 crop, this lens is really wide. The first time I shot with this lens, I was blown away by how sharp it is, just stunning clarity. Overall, the lens is built like a tank and is still light to walk around with. Really happy with it.
