    Logan Graphics 850 reviews

850 Platinum Edge 40" Mat Cutter is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good for the interum I use this in a production facility cutting 32x40 foam board. We cut a very high volume of foam, but still cannot justify moving to an automated machine. This cutter is good in the interum. You just need to know it's limitations. It makes very good cuts for a hand cutting machine. We have found it to be the best on the market for our needs. We go through a 850 Platinum Edge 40 Mat cutter every year and we have 4 on hand. Once the cutter is fowled it has a lot of play and differences in cuts can be off by over 1/8. Once we see differences like these we replace the unit.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A solid professional mat cutter A solid, professional mat cutter. Sturdy aluminum and stainless steel construction. Adjustable production stops, adjustable blade holders. Cuts 4 ply and 8 ply mat board successfully. Check squareness of Mat Guide and Squaring Arm before use; possible (easy) adjustment may be required. Cutting heads are solid and free gliding, but non ergonomic design. Careful setup and practice is required, as with all mat cutters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Why you SHOULD buy this product If you're like me, you're probably asking yourself if you really need to spend this kind of $$$ on a mat cutter. The answer is yes. Why not just buy a 32 inch model? If you plan on cutting 32 x 40 mat board, you need a 40 cutter. The problem with using a 32 cutter is that mat boards are not always 32. I got a whole batch of mat boards recently that were 32 1/8 and they won't work on a 32 cutter. Why not a less expensive 40 inch model? This cutter has a really solid squaring arm, which you need if you're cutting 40 mat board. But the real selling point is that making bevel cuts is dead simple. Seriously Superior Support The support at Logan Graphic is phenominal. Period. The mat cutter I bought had a subtile defect where the bevel cutter was shaving off part of the bar that it rides on. I took some photos and sent an email to Logan over the weekend. Not only did I get a prompt response Monday morning, but there was no did you try this or are you sure you're not doing that. The support person said straigth-away this is not right, we're going to replace it. and they did. Yes, it's expensive, but you won't regret buying it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent upgrade from my 650 I particularly appreciate the metal base, which isn't subject to warping. The extension arm is quite easy to install or remove. The entire setup feels like it's rugged and accurate. Took some thought before I spent that much cash to buy an upgrade, but I certainly don't regret it. Now, however, it takes two of us (I'm pushing 70) to move it around. If you're thinging about the next lower price, think hard, because this is a superior product.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not Recommended 1. Overcuts a chronic problem 2. Photographic paper and 4 ply mat board have ragged edges after downsizing no matter the blade depth 3. No cutting head guide like on the 550, makes line to line cutting hit and miss, very difficult 4. No blade depth gauge, depth needs to be re-set frequently, again more hit and miss On the verge of asking for a refund. Had much better results with the 550, but the 550 base wears out, it's particle board.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldn't ask for more Including freight to Australia this mat cutter costs almost $ ! But it's still worth it. It's cuts well once you set up all the guides and production stops. It's well built and looks good too. The only flaw that I think should be given more thought is the way the cutting head hits the stop at the end of the cut. It should come to a smooth stop instead of hitting it at full speed. Perhaps a spring could be incorporated into the stop.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 850 Platinum This is the best cutter I have used. It is just really expensive. It is so heavy you will not want to move it much. It took a few cuts to set up the start stop indicators and it is perfect. I can cut an 11x14 with a 6X9 window in like 15 seconds and without pencil marks. It cuts smoothly and is very accurate once you set it up. This cutter will save you so much time and I have even been able to trim prints with it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from An Outstanding Mat Cutter This is the machine to have if you are cutting mats for your own photos or artwork. If you are running a framing shop and making many, many mats each day you may need a wall-mounted or computer controlled cutter. This mat cutter is a bench-mounted unit and needs some room around it. You will want to find a location and a table on which it can stay all of the time. If you plan on packing it away after each use and storing it under the bed you will find that you never bother to get it out until you have a bunch of mats to cut. If you don't have room for a permanent set up, or don't plan to cut very many mats, you may want a smaller, more portable machine. That said, The Logan Graphics 850 is an accurate, sturdy piece of equipment. However, the accuracy is only as good as you work to make it. Pay attention to how you set the stops. They all have micro adjustments and you will have to make some slight adjustments--although the factory settings are nearly spot-on. Logan Graphics has many how-to videos on their website that are of great use. However, their users manuals are less so. I found several errors and outdated statements on the manual I received with my machine. Maybe not the best mat cutter on market, but it has the capability and quality of much more expensive units.
