Sony 30mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

Get in nice and close with the DT 30mm f/2.8 Macro SAM Lens from Sony. Designed for their APS-C format cameras, this lens will provide a normal-length 45mm equivalent along with a 1:1 magnification ratio. This is made possible through a minimum focus distance of just 5.1" and a minimum working distance of 0.8". Also, it has a maximum aperture of f/2.8 for selective focus techniques and working in dim lighting conditions. Further enhancing usability is the inclusion of a Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) for speedy and quiet focusing. Additionally, it has a seven-blade circular diaphragm for smooth, pleasing bokeh.

Designed for Sony's line of APS-C format cameras, this lens will provide a normal-length 45mm equivalent focal length which is a good option for general purpose shooting.
True macro design affords a life-size, 1:1 magnification ratio along with a 5.1" minimum focusing distance and 0.8" minimum working distance for capturing close-ups of your subjects.
An aperture range of f/2.8 to f/22 allows for operation in a wide range of shooting situations and enables photographers to better control depth of field.
By incorporating a Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) unit into the lens itself to drive the focusing element group, this lens is able to deliver smoother, quieter, and faster performance than coupled systems.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

Sony 30mm f/2.8 reviews

DT 30mm f/2.8 Macro SAM Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 54.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Closeup and nice standard lens This lens, when cropped into APS-C cameras (non fullframe, that is, every sony camera, except A850 and A900), the viewing angle is the same as a standard 50mm lens. For this, it is great for a walkaround prime lens. Its Macro capabilities are awesome, if you can afford to go as close as to a few millimeters of your subject (less than an inch, between the focused area and the front element). Focusing motor is not great, but does not get in the way of the photographer, except for its strange creeky sound. Not nice 49mm lens threads. Really small.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must have... almost A very cost effective lens and in my opinion a must have lens on a APS-C camera. My initial work with this lens simply impressed me due to its versatility in coverage and closeups. In fact it's macro capabilities are quite exceeded my expectations. If I am right, teh lens can get almost as close as a centimeter or so to the object. I was using SAL 50mm 1.8 almost exclusively and now SAL 30/2.8 is almost as good as the 50mm but for it's f2.8. So in the dusk 50mm rules. My other grievance is (just as with SAL50mm, the plastikiness of the lens). I am not sure if it will break or bounce if it falls down.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from cheap and good macro lens The sony 30mm f 2.8 is a good option for amateurs and semipros. For outdoors is a perfect option but also for indoors in a low light conditions because of the f 2.8. I would recommend this lens to a friend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Macro lens for beginner We purchased this macro lens for our daughter who is a beginner photographer using a Sony Alpha. She has taken some great photos with the lens that she wasn't able to with the lens that came with the camera as the standard lens would constantly try and focus on the object close up. The macro lens provides great up close photos while providing great clarity and crispness of the object i.e. flower, insect etc... Great affordable beginner lens for her to practice with.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sony Digital Technology at its best I bought this lens in December together with my Sony SLT-A65 digital camera-wonder... Sony had a special Holiday's promotion and the price I paid for it at B&H was just unbelievably low... In olden days during the Analog Era, I paid double the price for macro lenses of similar optical quality... It's a Macro lens that allows me to get very close, very close to the subject if need be... However, I can also use it as a prime lens for general photography because those 30mm in focal length are equivalent to 45mm of focal length if I were using a classic 35mm camera... The auto-focus is fast, accurate and smooth; it is small and light adding only about 5oz to my camera; the glass is of very good quality and f/2.8 gives me brighter image from the moment I'm focusing and composing through the EVF or LCD of my camera until the final moment when I shoot... I shoot RAW and am very pleased with quality of the images I get from this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A dream! Couldn't wait to check out the B&H superstore in NYC! I was all set to purchase just this lens when I fell in love with the camera body it was on and my hubby bought it for me too. I have had a blast taking up close shots with this lens. It is perfect for the amateur photographer to really get a feel for what you can do with up close shots. Use it with manual focus to really add interest to your pictures!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Noisy Focus!!! But great lens I use it with my Sony DSLRs and It's Wonderful lens with good resolution and contrast. Would give it 5 stars but the noisy AF (which bothers me sometimes) made me give it 4 stars instead.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a great lens I'm fairly new to DSLR photography and this is my first prime lens and whilst I probably don't yet have a sufficiently critical eye, I have to say I feel I'm getting excellent results so far, both for macro and landscape photography. One photo in particular, an extremely close-up shot of a beautiful red rose, really had the WOW factor for me and allowed me to feel I was making progress. I really like this lens and feel it's very reasonably priced.
