VariZoom VZ-DVRODS overview

  • 1Description

The Varizoom VZ-DVRODS high-quality rods system for DV/HDV cameras enables you to attach matteboxes, focus control systems, wireless adapters, and other accessories. Ideal for use with the VZ-FCU and EFCU focus controls on the Sony EX1 and EX3, the DV Rods system will also work with most other cameras. Modular and expandable, this is a versatile tool for elevating your creative capabilities.

The DV Rods system boasts an impressive range of adjustment that will accommodate most cameras, and the X-Y rods-adjustment plates are even reversible to allow greater upward adjustment.
The DV Rods system has additional threaded holes to enable attachment of aft-mount rods that will allow even more accessories to be mounted behind the camera, helping to counterbalance the fore-mounted accessories while keeping the overall configuration's center of gravity low.
Focus Control Compatibility
Designed to work with the VZ-FCU and EFCU focus control systems for the Sony PWM-EX1 and EX3, the DV Rods system not only provides a mount for the focus bracket, it will allow users to add a mattebox or any other accessory that can be mounted to standard 15mm rods.

    VariZoom VZ-DVRODS reviews

VZ-DVRODS VZ DV Rod System is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not the best for EX3 with a matte box I purchased this unit to mount a Redrock matte box with an EX3. Bad choice for a matte box unless you replace the rods with 4 rods. Overall, the construction is solid, but it has limited compatibility if you are using it on a tripod. The rods must be fulled extended to allow a tripod quick release plate to be attached to the bottom. You will have to purchase a separate sliding quick release adapter if you need to make more precise adjustments in positioning a camera.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not the best for EX3 with a matte box I planned to use this universal rod system for both my EX3 and EX1R cameras and a Redrock Micro matte box. The build quality is good, however, both 1/4-20 camera mount screws were missing from the sealed package which is not a major problem, but you expect Varizoom quality control to include all the parts. The bigger issue is that the rods are too long to allow the Redrock matte box swing-away arm to slide far enough toward the camera. Same issue with the EX1R. Rods that are 4 in length rather than 8 would be better for the the EX1/EX3. Verticle height adjustment on the rods does not permit alignment of the Redrock matte box. I found that unscrewing the rod connector plate from the base plate and turning the rod connector plate upside down, permits the rods to be raised enough to fit the matte box. The Varizoom Instruction Manual which turns out to be one sheet of paper, suggests turning the entire unit upside down and installing a VZ-QRP quick release plate on top of the baseplate for the EX3. This may help a balance problem on a tripod as the manual says, but it does not fix the rod length problem with the Redrock. Nice unit, good quality but very poor instructions and limited possibilties with Redrock matte box and EX1/EX3 without replacing the rods.
