Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 overview

  • 1Description

The Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM Autofocus Zoom is a super-wide angle lens with a relatively bright f/3.5 maximum aperture throughout its zoom range, helping to ensure high image quality.  The lens gathers enough light to make it a great choice for indoor shooting as well as landscapes and creative portraiture.  This version of the lens is exclusively made to fit Sony's Alpha lens mount, which is also shared by the discontinued Minolta Maxxum cameras.  It is not intended for use with Sony's "full frame" digital SLR cameras, or for any film-based Minolta Maxxum cameras.

With a wide angle viewing range of 102.4-63.8°, this lens can empower a photographer to produce creative images with exaggerated perspective.  Its Super Multi-Layer coating reduces flare and ghosting, and a HSM autofocus motor provides quiet operation, high speed, and perhaps most important the ability to manually override focus position at any time.

The 10-20 f/3.5 EX DC HSM incorporates an inner focusing system to eliminate front lens rotation, which also makes the lens able to use an included petal-type bayonet hood to eliminate extraneous light from striking the front of the optic.  Two ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) glass elements and a SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass element provide excellent color fidelity, and 4 aspherical lens elements provide correction for common distortions.

This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 9.4" (24cm) throughout the entire zoom range, and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:6.6.

Note: Vignetting will occur if the lens is used with 35mm SLR cameras or digital cameras with image sensors larger than APS-C size.

Broad 10-20mm zoom range is ideally suited to tight interiors or expansive landscapes with "APS-C" type digital SLRs
High Image Quality
Two ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) glass elements, one SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass element, and 4 aspherical lens elements help render undistorted scenes with true color
Fast and Silent AF
Sigma's best HSM autofocus allows for quick operation that's barely audible, along with fulltime manual override
EX Build Quality
Sigma "EX" lenses feature robust construction appropriate for demanding professional use, and are backed with a 4-year warranty against manufacturer defects for USA customers
Made in Japan
The 10-20 f/3.5 EX DC HSM is made in Sigma's Japanese factory

    Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 reviews

10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM Autofocus Zoom Lens for Sony Alpha is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 31.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens!!!!!! I shoot real estate photography for web and publication marketing. I have shot thousands of properties and over 50 magazine covers. I needed a lens with a wider view and as little distortion as possible. This lens did the trick. I use the Sony Alpha cameras. The pictures that you see were the first shooting with this lens, the first day out. Nothing is worse to me than to see a wide angle shot that is distorted. Photography is changing very quickly due to equipment advances. A photography has to be able to advance and stay on the cutting edge to stay alive. I would buy this lens over and over again. Great wide angle views. And B&H seems to always be right on target with their reviews as well as service. Thank you, Mike

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens I use this with my Sony a77 and I love it. Great landscape shots and even indoors in tight spaces. The flexibility of going to 20mm is really helpful over a 10mm prime. Don't expect much bokeh effect with a f/3.5 though. For landscape shots, especially with a tripod, 3.5 is plenty. The focus is quite fast. It is somewhat heavy but you would expect that out of a quality lens. I recommend using the included hood with this lens as you get flares and what-not depending on light source locations. It also comes in a padded, zippered, cube box thing for those who don't have any other means of carrying it around. Overall, this lens can do a lot and I highly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love at first shot Superb quality at a fair price. This lens is amazing. I wish I would have made the leap months ago. I'm a realtor and shoot my own photos. This lens was the missing link. I shoot with a Sony a65. My friend shot with much more expensive lenses, full frame camera and the results were very similar. My processed photos were a little softer, but then again I don't do much processing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Lens I decided on this lens as it was the F3.5 vs the F4.5. It takes great photos and I have yet to see any real vignetting. The photos are crisp and clean and I could not have asked for a better Wide Angle. Very happy with it! The auto Focus is quick so far I have seen no aberrations at either 10mm or 20mm. Seems very constant.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Lens Bought whilst on holiday, got some wonderful photos around New York. Good autofocus and easy manual as well. Excellent wide angle field of view which works well with the alpha. Less good: Can only take 1 screw filter to the front without vignetteing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice lens way above kit lens quality I am a photo enthusiest and wanted an ultra-wide zoom. This one suits me well. It is relativly fast for a mid-price lens and the apeture does not change with zoom. On my Sony A100 it does hunt to focus in lower light but easy to switch to manual in these instances. Overall I am very pleased with my purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beyond my expectations: I saw someone praise this lens and thought I would give it a try. I knew I could buy the lens, try it and return it if I was not happy. I received the lens attached it to my Sony a77 and was off to give it a try within the hour. That afternoon and the next morning I spent about 6 hours total. I am so pleased with the results. Fast focus, sharp photos, and great interior results.
