Impact VA903 overview

  • 1Description

The Impact 5-Lamp Fluorescent Cool Light Diffusion Kit gives you great flexibility at an excellent price: 2 daylight-balanced fluorescent light heads (variable across 3 f-stops), 2 light stands, and 2 diffusers to soften the light. Each light head holds 5 lamps (for a total of 150 watts), and each lamp can be turned on/off separately to increase or decrease the overall light output. An 18.5" reflector provides wide, even coverage, and an included internal diffusion panel can be used to further soften the light. A fabric diffusion sock that fits over the front of the light is included for further light diffusion, with a 1/2-stop loss of light.

  • 2 x Impact VA903 5-Lamp Fluorescent Cool Light (120 VAC)

The Impact 5-Lamp Fluorescent Cool Light accepts screw-in fluorescent lamps. Independent switches on the rear of the unit vary light output across a three f-stop range by selecting between one, two, three, four, or all five lamps.

This 150-watt fluorescent head provides 7500 lumens, and is 5500K daylight balanced without the need for conversion filters.

The angle of the head is easily adjusted with its tilting 5/8" light stand mount and convenient positioning handle.

Separate power switches mounted on the rear allow "dimming" of this fixture.
The 18.5" reflector provides wide, even coverage, and an included internal diffusion panel can be used to further soften the light.
Includes a 13' detachable grounded power cord.

  • 2 x Impact Air-Cushioned Light Stand (Black, 8')

This aluminum Impact Air-Cushioned Light Stand rises to a height of 8' and folds down to 29.6". The stand has sure-twist section locks and 4 sections and will support up to 8 lb.

If you forget to tighten any section with your light mounted, the light slowly descends, thanks to the air-cushioned action. This useful feature saves equipment and fingers from harm during busy photo sessions.

  • 2 x Impact 18" Diffuser Sock

This Impact Diffuser Sock is a heat-resistant (see note), 18" nylon fabric light softener ringed with strong elastic for a snug fit around metal strobe head reflectors. The diffuser softens the light output and reduces it by 1 stop.

Diffuser Socks are stackable, offering the opportunity to increase the diffusion effect while reducing the light output.

Note: Intended for use on flash heads or fluorescent sources. Do not use on continuous hot light sources.

Impact VA903 reviews

5-Lamp Cool LT 2-Light Diffusion Kit is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality Lighting w/o Breaking the Bank B&H review request e-mail asked for individual component reviews but as I purchased this kit, this review is for the kit. I will try to make this useful. ....Each light fixture comes with 18 reflector, 5 CFL bulbs, an inner diffusion panel, a lighstand, mount, and an 18 diffuser sock. The fixture is good quality, of solid build, and all switches are firm. No defects in wiring or alignments. The CFL bulbs are 32w and mfg for 5500K - 5900K. Actual color temp is 5600K. Because of their design CFL provide more output with less imput and are softer than other lighting. Each bulb puts out 125w while only using 32w. In total with all 5 lights running the unit draws 160w will providing around 625w. However, this is deceptive because CFL lights are softer. As spirals they have greater surface area so are a larger light source. Their output is directed to the sides (not the top), and they are white coated. All this makes the bulb more diffuse to begin with. Mounted as they are sideways with tops facing out, there are no hot spots forward. They are more like diffused sunlight through a window with shears. The reflector is large and is dull aluminum flecked similar to galvanized aluminum. This keeps the refection soft. The inner diffuser is circular and is wide enough to just cover the bulbs. It is made of milky colored plastic, again keeping with the smoothness theme. It attaches to two rods with thumb screws. Very easy on / off. The sock is simply fitted white diffusion material. It fits snugly around rim of reflector and is not difficult to get on or off.The unit also comes with a light stand. The Impact 2212ABH. This is good because it is made more sturdy than Impact's other 8' AC light stand; the LS-8A. However, do not extend the lightstand to its full length. You don't need it anyway. Keep the bottom supports at or below the middle of the 3 legs, otherwise the center of gravity is too high (this is true for all lightstands regardless of make). Also true of all stands, the top segment becomes relatively thin and while the fixture is not heavy, center of gravity comes into play again. Just common sense really; you don't want to make the set up top heavy. BTW: Indoor use only on this. The fixture also comes with a mount which is good quality. It fits snugly on stand. The Tilt handle has a little play to start with but tightens up nice with use.Actual Use: There are really 4 ways to use this. Open bulbs are not one. This just puts light all over the room. They are: Reflector no diffusion, Ref / Inner Diffusion on, Ref / inner Dif / Sock on, Ref / inner def off / sock on. The differences are subtle. To start with, the light is broad and extremely even with very nice gradual fall off. It is also nearly shadowless (eg window with shears). Adding the inner diffusion panel essentially creates a parabolic reflector. Think Dentist office light. Bright, diffuse, and no shadow. This works best for me. While it may not seem possible, the sock takes it further by just taking away a bit of brightness. 1/2 stop to be exact... measured repeatedly and very consistent. The entire set up is consistent. Under various lighting conditions, there is a 2.5 EV range from single light to all five. The starting EV will be dependent on other lighting used but as a single unit functioning in a totally dark room while lighting an 18% grey target against a flat (paint) off white wall, the measured EV range at ISO 100 was 9 - 11.5. The largest gain is between 1 and 2 lights (1 stop / EV). All other increments provide 1/2 stop gain. Again, this is consistent in all conditions. The starting and ending EV may be higher but the range of 2.5 EV stands up. (Starting EV can also be lower if used at greater distance. The distance for this test was 5 feet from light source to subject at 45 degree angle to subject from camera at 10 feet... normal portrait key light set up for me. RE: distance, the light quality stays nicely diffused even at greater distances)In actual use utilizing one as a key light and one as fill for portraits, the starting EV is around 11. This allows me to comfortably shoot at f5.6 or f8, ISO 100, 1/60 - 1/ 500 sec. Results are also similar for commercial still life and product shooting. Note: There are 3 switches. 1 light, 2 light diagonal top right, 2 light diagonal top left. Using combinations, 1 - 5 light set ups are possible. Also, as noted, the light is broad but is easily controlled with barndoors, subtractive reflectors, or just feathering.I realize this may have been long winded but it is good to get as much accurate info as possible from someone who actually purchased it and uses it.I hope this helps others in their decision. The bottom line for me is that, as a working semi-pro, I got what I needed; flexible, high quality small studio lighting at a fraction of the cost of say the Westcott TD5 kit which goes for over $1500. (of course the TD5 has a built in strobe as well but its not something I needed). There are many of you out there who are either aspiring or actual photographers who want very good continuous studio lighting but can't or don't want to pay the thousands of $$. This could be your answer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Happy I use a set of these to photograph wreaths that my wife markets and sells. I tried two single lights and they were far from enough. I could have probably used the 3 bulb units, but opted for the few dollars more to go with these for future projects, as well as the versitility of the individual switches. I am very pleased with my purchase. The one warning I will make are that these things tend to be big. I had an old single bulb set with 10 reflectors, but when I initially saw these 5 bulb units with 18 reflectors I was taken back by the size. If you studio is a normal size room you probably won't notice it. I've learned to live with them and really have no problems.I would also warn about the stands. They are marginal at best. They will work for me, but understand for my application they stay setup and only marginal height adjustments are made. I do sometimes bounce the light of the ceiling which makes me worry that they'll topple over. A heavier stand would be preferable not only for stability, but for durability if you must setup and teardown constantly for each shoot.
