are these good for children (ages 8-12)?
No.
The connection wire is short, cheap, and two wire design (vs one-wire that dangles on one side). Also the entire headset is fragile and seems breakable. The Koss UR20 is much more robust, has a generously long, heavier wire, the wire dangles from only one side (not from both ears), and has better sound quality. Also the UR20 is less expensive. Hope this helps.

Does it amplify e.g. an I-pod?
It does not amplify because it's a passive device.But the mine one connected to my moto g sounds great!!
