Tamron SP 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II VC LD Aspherical Overview

  • 1Description

Tamron's SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II VC LD Aspherical (IF) is a high-speed, wide-to-moderate-telephoto zoom lens designed for Nikon DSLR cameras with smaller sensors. It covers the very popular 17-50mm focal length range (equivalent to 26-78mm in the full-frame 35mm format) making it extremely versatile. Tamron's Vibration Compensation (VC) mechanism minimizes the effects of handheld camera shake (up to 4-stops), providing a means to great low-light shooting.

The lens delivers impressive sharpness and striking contrast over its entire focal length and aperture range. A maximum aperture of f/2.8 delivers images enhanced by shallow depth-of-field, and smooth, natural transitions in out-of-focus areas of the image. Additionally, this lens carries a 6-Year Tamron Limited Warranty (U.S.A. only)

Di II Lenses are designed for exclusive use on digital cameras with smaller-size imagers. These lenses are not designed for conventional cameras or digital cameras with image sensors larger than APS-C size (24mm x 16mm).

Tamron SP 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II VC LD Aspherical Reviews

SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II VC LD Aspherical (IF) Lens for Nikon F is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 62.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Sadly Returned Let me start off by saying that I had high expectations for this lens; unfortunately, it fell short. I felt that the VC worked better that the VR on my Nikon 18-105 or the 70-300 so that feature, in my book is a winner. However, the indoor and low-light images I shot wide open at 2.8 were simply unusable. Blurry would be an understatement. Yes, I know that its possible that I could have received a copy of the lens that somehow slipped through QC and others may have great results at 2.8, I did not. It did get pretty sharp above f4 but even then it was only average compared to the lenses I currently own. I'm sad that this lens didn't work for me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice moderate to wide zoom I like to take landscape shots and use a wide angle to get up nice an close to subjects. So I missed my Nikon 18-200 when I gave it to my wife. I have a 70-200 but my other zoom was an old 35-85. I decided this on this lens for the wide angle and fast f-stop. I have not been disappointed. I like having an f2.8 through the entire zoom range. And having vibration reduction is just that much better. Honestly, the only thing that kept me from rating this with 5 stars is the fact that the zoom is a little stiff. Not unusable by any means but not as smooth as a nikon lens or my Tamron 70-200. I'd still recommend this for someone that wants both wide and fast.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A real-world excellent lens. I recently wrote an article for photos4clix on this lens. If I were to sum-up my experience it would be an excellent lens, for real world use. The VC (vibration control) adds an additional depth. Sharp, even wide open,a good compromise in zoom range, I have no difficulty in calling this a pro-quality product. I purchased the Tamron 17-50mm VC from B&H because I knew that if my lens came in defective, I would have recourse. Reminder: When using VC press the shutter button down half way and give it a second tom do its magic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good lens. Low ratins are off the mark. It's not as good as the Nikon 17-55/2.8. It's also considerably lighter and smaller than that lens, at less than half the price. Some of the one- and two-star reviews of this lens are way off. One reviewer complains that he couldn't use it wide-open to photograph weddings. No kidding. If you're using this lens for professional wedding work, you should either be stopping down and using a flash, or purchasing a better lens, or finding a new line of work. Of course you can't use this wide-open to shoot a wedding: it's a convenient, compact travel lens -- it's not high-end glass for professional low-light work. If you want to shoot with available light in a church, buy a f/1.4 prime from Nikon or Zeiss. Another reviewer compares it to his 90mm Tamron macro. Absurd. Even the Nikon zooms compare poorly to their Micro-Nikkor counterparts. Macro lenses are the sharpest lenses you can buy, but they're often large and unwieldy -- you sacrifice convenience for image quality. There are always tradeoffs. Welcome to the real world. Bottom line is that, for what it is, this lens is quite good: a compact, lightweght walkaround lens. It's a little soft wide-open, but good enough for the majority of shots you'll take with it. Stopped down it's on par with Nikon glass.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A real winner After reading the mixed reviews this lens has gotten on this website, I was reluctant to drop over $600 on a gamble, but I'm glad I did. I suspect there must be some tremendous sample variation in the manufacture of this lens, because mine is absolutely perfect. ... The complaints that the lens is unusable at f2.8 prove unfounded in the one I got. Yes, the depth of field at that aperture is minimal, and thus much of the photo will seem to be out of focus, but the center of focus is absolutely sharp. And sharpness across the frame is also great, with minimal softness in the corners, even at f2.8. The lens also focuses perfectly, even in low light (of course my D90 has a focus assist light working in such situations). Lastly the vibration reduction seems to be good for a minimum of 3 stops improvement over hand-holding without it in operation. This lens is great for any kind of photography requiring a fast wide-to-normal zoom. The vibration reduction makes it even more useful for low-light photography in places like concert halls. Overall a fine lens, worth every penny I spent on it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Constant Aperture Zoom Lens I bought the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 VC to use as my walkaround lens. I'm very happy with my purchase. AF is right on and fast (I think faster than my kit lens), VC does what is suppose to, pictures are sharp even at f/2.8. Since I bought it, 2-3 weeks ago, this lens haven't come out from my camera. Is a joy to use a constant aperture lens. It also have a smooth bokeh.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Lens for the money I am a wedding and event photographer and was looking to replace an older lens. This lens worked flawlessly at the first event I shot. the focus was quick and sharp as a tack. The build feels solid. The lens was bigger than I had expected but still very manageable. I have only had the lens a few weeks now but all the Tamron's I have owned in the past have held up very well. For the price this lens far surpasses my expectations!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sweet Lens I purchased this lens to use on my D300s and replace my kit 18-55. I needed a faster lens, but didn't have the cash flow to purchase Nikkor. A week after having the lens, I put it through the paces. I shot a low light indoor church wedding with a low light indoor reception. A couple days after that, I shot a X-mas party with a band, also low light. The photos came out amazing. The VC is a must for me and love the 2.8. The VC is alittle noisy but not a problem. An excellent purchase, plus a great price.

How does this Tamron lens compare with the Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED? There is a vast difference in price. What are the benefits of the Nikon vs. this lens?
    Asked by: W Scott A.
Straight up is the quality of lens you are getting. The Tamron is noisy and didn't perform as well on the sharpness and clarity out to the edges of images I took. I returned the Tamron and bought the Nikon. If price is an issue I'd say the Tamron wasn't terrible, but definitely not even close to the quality of build and image sharpness the Nikon lens gives. My Nikon 17-55 lens lives on my camera. If you are trying to get into good quality landscapes I'd recommend the Nikon lens over the Tamron.
