Lowel Blender overview

  • 1Description

The Lowel Blender LED Fixture (120-240 VAC/12 VDC) throws an entirely new light on the problems of shooting in mixed-light environments. When neither tungsten nor daylight are the right color, you just fudge it, right? Not anymore. The Blender makes it possible to fine-tune your lights to match (or contrast with) whatever light you're grappling with. With twin arrays of daylight and tungsten LEDs in one fixture, two simple dials make it possible to dial in the light to exactly the color you choose (from approximately 2800 to 6000K). This tiny, lightweight unit's (1.2 lb and small enough to hold with a pistol grip) output is comparable to a 56W tungsten light of similar beam angle and it's dimmable from 100 to 10%. It runs on the included 120/240 VAC adapter or an optional camcorder battery sled (Panasonic, Sony, or Canon). Also included is clear front safety plastic and three different front diffusers. The included power adapter is supplied with two power cords, one for 120V circuits and one for 240V circuits.

  • Tungsten light, daylight, or anywhere in-between is available with the Blender
  • Mix 2 arrays of high CRI LEDs to blend color to your choice in mixed light environments
  • The fixture is small enough for a pistol grip but emits a robust 56W of light
  • 3 diffusers are included for a variety of softening effects

    Lowel Blender reviews

Blender LED Fixture (120-240 VAC/12 VDC) is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful and portable I'm still learning how to use this light, but so far I'm very happy with it. It gets very bright for it's size, but the brightness can be toned down. And of course you can dial the intensity of the yellow and blue, which is very handy. The light comes with three filters, which I recommend using since they soften the light somewhat - at full intensity I find it too harsh on it's own. I love the portability and I expect to be using this a lot, both on it's on and with florescent softboxes. For the price, I wish this came with an instruction book and a carrying case.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice light, one inexcusable weakness Used to augment existing light in video. I often can't set up a complete set of lights, so this just augments existing light, or is used for fill. Since this does not overwhelm existing light most of the time I use it, I can adjust the color temperature to be a close match to ambient - or a touch warmer or cooler if I want. The light is pretty tightly focused (head and shoulders about 6 feet away) and spread is not adjustable, but the diffusers help spread it a little. I'm also planning to modify a small soft box to use with it at times. If you have the room, it puts out a useful amount of light from as far away as 15 feet, but it needs to be direct and shadows will be harsh. The inexcusable weakness is the yellow plastic lever on top that rotates to hold the supplied diffusers in place. Literally the first time I touched it, it broke. The screw that holds it in place came out and brought half the threads with it. While mine may have been defective, and it was within the return period, I kept it. Why? Because I like the light, and replacing it wouldn't correct the poor engineering that resulted in the broken lever. I fabricated a stronger lever instead. Others might just use gaffer tape to hold diffusers in place. This kind of weakness should not exist in this price range, especially in a product made by a mature and experienced company. One other suggestion: supply it with a hotshoe adapter. While I use it on a stand, I would assume many users would want to use this on-camera. I can rig together a 5/8 stud to hotshoe adapter, but it would take several pieces and a trip to the hardware store. Lowel could make one that would simply replace the arm that attaches to a 5/8 stud.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great little light with one glaring flaw This past spring, I (finally) embraced DSLR movie making, and after visiting the Lowel booth at NAB 2011, I decided this would be a perfect addition to my lighting kit. From a utilitarian viewpoint, it works exactly as described. The blending of daylight and tungsten is straightforward and very effective. I am not in the least disappointed in its ability to provide adequate light in situations that would normally require gels. The one head-scratching flaw: the awful plastic knob that holds in place the included diffusion accessories. I really have no idea what Lowel was thinking. This plastic piece literally melted off within a couple of days of use. Since it's not an absolute necessity (the light of course works just fine without it just don't turn the unit upside down), I have continued to use the light and don't plan on returning it. It's simply sloppy engineering...
