    GiSTEQ PhotoTrackr Mini Reviews

PhotoTrackr Mini DPL900 is rated 3.1 out of 5 by 75.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as specified! A lot has been said about this device... and depending where you fit the computer scale it is either easy or difficult to work out. I would suggest (and what I have done) to download the latest software from the GiSTEQ website: 1. the driver 2. the software 3. switch on device and plug into USB port 4. Operating system detects device and readies it 5. launch software 6. follow the prompts... I only use the tracker, download the tracks and then use Lightroom to geocode the images with Geoffrey Friedl's Geo Support plugin... simply fantastic... .. and fantastic value considering the cost of it all around the $60 mark...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works once you figure out some things Being fond of older Nikon cameras D100, F5, F100, I wanted a way to tag my photos. I bought this back in March of '10 after moving out to Durango. ... After struggling on how to use it to write the GPS data to the Metadata of RAW(NEF) files and tired of having to pay upgraded software fees I found after much searching that if you export the .GPS data and then use some free software I found Geosetter it would do exactly what I wanted it to do. Start up time is faster than my Garmin about 1/2 sec compared to sometimes upwards of a minute. It is not as streamline as my GP1 attached to my work camera D3X, but it works and I can use it on any camera I have.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Mac Useres - Don't Buy This Doesn't work on MAC. I purchased this and the extra Pro MAC Software $ for raw photos and could not get it to run on my MAC (I think its OK on windows). I contacted the company 3 times by email and 3 times by telephone requesting tech support over a period of 3 weeks. Two times I was told that I would receive a return telephone call, which never came. I, very reluctantly, write this because I like to support American companies but the product must work and they must value their customers.I am still hoping that they will come through and I will be able to process my egypt vacation. So far, this was a waste of money. David

Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK, but some annoying things Love that it's compact, rechargeable (although that could be a problem), and it keeps the tracks just fine so far on a few tests. The downside: 1) The software it comes with is not user friendly and why do I need to use it when I use Aperture and Lightroom? 2) Really, I have to pay extra to do RAW/DNG images? That stinks! 3) Again, I use Aperture/Lightroom to catalog my photographs. WHY, must I use your software and import my photos into it just to geotag it. This makes the workflow really painful So bottom line. Great hardware...the software and integration into workflows really stinks.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty Cool Little Gadget I bought this with full knowledge that a paid software upgrade is required to use it with RAW images. Instead, I'll export the datafile and use a lightroom plugin (search for Jeffrey Friedl's Geoencoding) to merge the geotag with my photos' meta-data. Paying for the software upgrade seems rediculous! Product works as described, though I don't have a lot of faith in the friction-fit of the cap over the USB jack. Nothing a bit of tape won't take care of though. Seeing as this is a USB device, it sure would be nice if it came with the drivers & software loaded on it, rather than the useless mini-cd or having to download. Setup was a bit friggy, with having to figure out what COM Port it was using etc. Looking forward to not have to remember where I was for every photograph!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Neat and easy to use. Simple way to get lat and long data for your photos. Just sync the time with your camera or multiple cameras and it will add the GPS data to your photos when you download them. Does take the extra step of downloading to your pc then loading them into the program provided. Program shows your track on a google map or google earth with waypoints for all your pictures. Pretty cool. It does prompt you to upgrade the software to pro version for $20 for more features and less restrictions. Haven't done that yet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding GPS logger Thanks to all the reviews, I used mytracks freeware instead of supplied software, except the driver I got online. Works great on my Mac. Much smaller and more convenient than Garmin Edge 205 I had been using. I highly recommend this with the free mytracks program. I use Iphoto. No problem with raw file tagging.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not good for altitude and infected files I have bought 3 of those devices (I lost one and gave one as a gift). The idea is great, the software a bit tedious to set up, but once it's installed, it was great... At least for assigning GPS data to pictures. The device is not precise enough to use as a GPS unit for tracking bike rides or for running. Also, altitude is completely off, and speed measured is not reliable. I have asked about these issues on Gisteq forums, still no answer after 10+ months. I do not use the device anymore because every time I start the software to upload the data from the device, I end up getting a backdoor bot in my Gisteq folder on my next malware scan... not sure if the software is the cause of the infection, but the last four times I used the software, my Gisteq folder was infected. Beware!
