Neumann TLM 102 overview

  • 1Description

Styled in a nickel finish, TLM-102 Large-Diaphragm Studio Condenser Microphone from Neumann is a large diaphragm condenser microphone operating in a cardioid polar pattern. It has the ability to withstand very high sound pressure levels.

The capsule, with its high SPL rating, permits the recording of percussion, drums, amplifiers, and other very loud sound sources. The microphone is equally capable when recording lower volume sounds due to its very fast transient response. However, its most important applications are in the realm of vocals and speech.

A slight boost above 6 kHz provides great vocal presence, while below 6 kHz the frequency response is extremely linear for minimal coloration and a clearly defined bass range. The capsule has an elastic suspension for minimizing structure-borne noise, while an integrated pop screen in the grille aids in suppressing plosives in vocal and speech recording.

Pressure-gradient transducer
Compact, smaller-scale body

    Neumann TLM 102 reviews

TLM-102 Large-Diaphragm Studio Condenser Microphone (Nickel) is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smooth!!! After testing my new TLM 102, I can honestly say that it has an incredibly smooth and even sound. If you're looking for a mic that adds color or flattery to your source, this is clearly NOT the mic for you. But if you want a mic with solid low end, slightly mid-forward and rounded smooth highs, then this is the mic of your dreams. You can always add color by pairing it with a colorful preamp or using a bit of DAW magic. I am running my TLM 102 through a Blue Robbie and the sound on vocals is nothing short of beautiful. Very transparent, but not at all thin or harsh. Just warm and clear. Very 3D sounding. I would highly recommend this mic for any source.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Big sound in a small package I currently own a Neumann u87 and after a little subtractive eq and slight eq bumps here and there I have actually preferred the 102 over it for many applications. Out the box it reminds me of a voice over mic with its presence and heavy low end. I don't get as much sibilance with it compared to my u87. I have used it for hip hop vocals with great results with my avalon 737. This mic is extremely small and can fit in the palm of your hands or pocket. I also sold some of my larger gear and purchased a duet for ipad. I am loving how my gear is getting more compact. I feel as though the technology is allowing for a great sound in much smaller devices without sacrificing quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Little Gem This microphone is an absolute gem. The TLM 102 is the Neumann entry level microphone. It is a large diaphragm, side address mic, very small compared to its relatives. It is solidly built, but light enough to easily mount for a podcast mic, and never seems to get in the way of copy. It is my favorite mic for voiceover, as it gives a nice smooth tonality. I love the way it sounds without compression or sweetening. After micing guitar and violin, I can say it does a fine job with stringed instruments as well. For a Neumann, it is quite inexpensive; however, for a home studio, it is pricey. Is it worth the extra money? Although it was for me, there are other mic's with nearly as good performance in the $300 range. For voice work, I really like the Audio Technica AT-4033a, although it is larger and heavier. The Shure SM7b is great if you're looking for a smooth broadcast sound. I have also used and enjoyed the Sennheiser MD421, especially when I wanted a slightly brighter sound from a dynamic mic. These less expensive alternatives are worth considering if you want high quality sound, but don't want to spend several hundred dollars more. Having said that, I love this little Neumann, and don't regret for an instant having bought it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little mic This is a great mic for both vocals and instruments. I record in my little studio and it sounds as nice as my old U87i.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great voiceover mic! The clarity on this mic is fantastic, even compared to its big brother the TLM 103. The compact design makes it a hit with users who don't want a lot of bulk right in front of their face.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb and smooth vocals! I started doing vocals with a low-end mic that came along with the Focusrite Scarlett Studio 2nd Gen kit. Then I upgraded my gear to Rode NT1-A mic and subsequently with AKG mic, but was not getting the clear and natural vocals and have to do a lot of plugins/EQs. Finally, I got this Neumann TLM-102 after reading the reviewsand research. This is an excellent mic! Vocals are so smooth and natural. Need no or a very little EQ to get the perfect vocals. Very warm and strong vocals which allowsme to easily play around within the DAW. The recordings are no less than a high-grade professional studio. Noise level is approx nil (super quite) and with a pop-shield it works simply amazing. You won't regret the investment you do with this little master! Lastly, quick delivery by B&H and excellent packing!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Remarkably small, but with a great sound It is easy to be deceived into thinking this isn't a substantial microphone because it is so small, but it performs as well as other large diaphragm condenser mics twice the size and twice the price. I wish I had gotten the shock mount. I'm using a universal shock mount, and the microphone is dwarfed by it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Microphone Seeing this for the first time my immediate reaction was that this is too good to be true. However thinking it over I knew that Neumann wouldn't sacrifice quality just to get their gear at an affordable price point. This mic is quality! It's perfect for the home studio. Anything recorded with this can easily be punched in at a pro studio, if your using the right pre's of course. It's the smallest microphone I've owned. A great introduction into the Neumann family!
