Vixen Optics 5863 Overview

  • 1Description

Built to support a 20 lb payload, and equipped with two fine adjustment handles for whole circle slow motion in both directions, the Porta II Mount from Vixen comes with a sturdy set of legs that adjust from 35 to 51". The Porta II minimizes support-system-oriented frustration when searching for and tracking celestial objects.

The Porta II is solid, and its slow-motion flexible handles minimize vibrations to keep the view sharp. Precision tracking of planets and ships on the horizon becomes a simple event thanks to a fine-tooth geared drive that's activated by turning the elevation or azimuth control handles.

The "World-Standard" dovetail system ensures that the Porta II can be used to support most dovetail-mounted optical tube assemblies (OTAs) and binoculars. The Porta II mount head is detachable and compatible with all other Vixen tripods. The tripod is constructed from rugged aluminum alloy, and the legs extend from 35 to 51".

No locks or clutches
Portable alt-azimuth mount with precision slow-motion control in both axes
Slow-motion control with whole circle movement via 120-tooth wheel gears

    Vixen Optics 5863 Reviews

Porta II Alt-Azimuth Mount is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well made, sturdy, good looking. Same probelms as before. I use my two Vixen Porta Mounts for easy tracking of the Sun and Moon, during eclipses. Good only for still photos, no drive, which is fine.Sturdy, low vibration, smooth movement. Following the moon or sun is easy. Two problems: handles fall off, and needs expensive camera adapter. Both handles which control movement fall off easily. Both are held on by small set screws, which work loose during use, about every hour or so. Not serious, but annoying. This mount has a standard Vixen dovetail, widely compatible. To mount a camera, as I do, rather than a telescope, you need a hundred dollar VIXEN camera adapter, available on @.But I do like the Porta mount, it works well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Value I use this mount primarily for terrestial viewing and some astronomical viewing such as the moon and planets. The mount is sturdy as a rock, no shimming and shaking. I mount either a C90 or C5 onto it and it works fine and could support heavier loads if necessary. I like the idea of not having any clutches to deal with, just nudge the scope in the direction you want it and it stays there. A well made piece of gear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Mount! I use this as my grab and go mount. It easily points where I need it, and stays there.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Grab and Go Mount My Astro Tech 72mm refractor sits atop this mount. With that telescope - it is solid, portable, and capable. The slow motion controls were a must for me. I like this mount so much that I gave my first away - to a family member - and bought me another.
