Leica 40390 overview

  • 1Description

Offering style, elegance, and the optical performance you would expect from Leica, the Monovid 8x20 Monocular brings distant subjects in close and reveals the tiny details of nearby objects. Whether you're scoping a performer on stage, glassing the treeline for the Lord God bird, or investigating the intricate subtleties of a Nautilus shell – you'll be glad you didn't leave home without it.

The Monovid's 8x optical system features a phase-corrected roof prism and lenses with HDC and AquaDura coatings, to maximize light transmission and deliver a bright, sharp image. Inside the Monovid's cylindrical leather carry case there's a special pocket for a very special attachment – a close-up lens that allows 8x magnification at distances as close as 9.8". Its aluminum housing is nitrogen-filled to prevent internal fogging in any climate, and it is sufficiently watertight to withstand being submerged to a depth of more than 16 feet with no ill effects.

    Leica 40390 reviews

Monovid 8x20 Monocular (Black) is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 32.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Compact Optic I ordered this monocular while on a five month motorcycle trip, having forgotten to take my small Leica binoculars. This unit is in keeping with the optical quality of my other Leica sport optics. The Monovid is very compact and rugged. It will easily fit in a shirt pocket. Additionally, its waterproofness and hydroscopic lens coating mean it will make an excellent mobile hunter's tool, and I will likely use it as such in lieu of my green 7x42 Ultravid binoculars. It is easy to hold stable using both hands or just one hand when the elbow is supported. I would highly recommend the dedicated neck strap, which should be included with this product, especially at its high price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Monovid simply works. This is a very high quality item that is simple to use with excellent optics. I am a professional photographer and tend to review glass with a critical eye. The Leica doesn't dissappoint and its weight and size are just about perfect. Image stability at 8X isn't an issue if you brace your fingers to your forehead and palm the Mono in the webbing of your thumb and index finger. Mine came with a neckstrap even though I read that it didn't, so I purchased one separately and now have two...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great monocular I am a long-time user of the Leica 8x20s, and they are my choice for hiking and travelling because of their size, weight, and optical excellence. I wanted an even smaller optic to carry when the 8x20s didn't seem warranted, and the 8x20 Monovid fit my requirements perfectly. It has the same optical and build quality as the 8x20s in a single barrel, small package, as well as the same eye cup and relief, which works for me and my glasses. I hold it cupped in the palm of one hand and use the other to focus. The case is great and has to contribute to the price. It is leather, pops the Monovid up when it is opened, has a magnetic clasp, and stores a screw-on close-up lens. Very high quality optics and case, small, lightweight -- it is easy to carry and very handy. I also got the longer strap so I can wear it around my neck.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Outstanding Glass I don't care for compact binoculars and have long considered a quality monocular. It came down to Leica vs. Zeiss and, after a good deal of research, Leica won. I couldn't have made a better choice. The optics and resolution are razor sharp and I easily get a full field of view, even with eyeglasses. Even the case is clever; the macro lens stores right inside the lid.I would buy the Monovid again in a heartbeat and recommend it highly. ...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Pleased with Puchase Walking my dogs in a wooded area every morning and most evenings, I often hear owls or herons and wished I could get a good look at them. I had a pair of decent-quality binoculars, but this Leica Monocular is worlds better. It is compact, very high quality, and I now carry it with me each time I go. I love it, and wished I had bought one years ago. Took it to the symphony yesterday and, again, so glad I purchased this take-along!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceeded my expectations I was a bit hesitant to spend this much for a monocular, as my last one only cost around $30 and was mostly satisfactory. However, I have owned very high quality optics - cameras - and knew how much a difference this can make in the viewing experience. Suffice to say, this Leica Monovid does not disappoint. The viewing experience is night and day from my other. Low-light colors are rendered accurately. The image is clear from edge to edge. Really a pleasure to use. Also of note, the design and build is superb!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible tool I use this for bird watching and for checking on my son while he is sailing. It is absolutely flawless. Bright, clear, solidly built, it is expensive but totally worth it. I saved for a year for it, and I'm glad I did. I don't use the case, because that makes it too big. Just slip it in my jacket pocket and its always ready, and perfect size for everyday carry. You will be happy you got it. I can't think of anything bad about it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for hunting I have owned and used several pair of binoculars for hunting. They performed well, but were heavy and big - even the little Nikon 10x25. Just too much bulk and weight under a hunting coat or in a side pocket. I bought the Leica 8x20 monocular as an experiment, to see if I could use it some of the time. It has performed so well that I now carry only it into the woods. In any legal hunting light, I am able to clearly see my quarry and make quick, informed decisions. A neck strap lets it stay warm under my coat, and allows access with one hand, thus with low apparent motion. The low light performance of this monocular is astounding, especially considering its small exit pupil (2.5). The focus ring is easy to use, yet doesn't move out of focus while in a pocket. This monoculars light weight, high quality, and small profile ensure that you will never hesitate to take it along. We've all gone out for a short walk, and left our heavy binos behind because we didn't expect to need them. This cures that. I will probably never again carry bulky, heavy binoculars for hunting, sports viewing, etc. Usage Notes: If your optics needs extend out to 200 yards or so, and your time of use is no more than 10 minutes at a time, then these are perfect for you in any light that you would find yourself in. Hunters use their eyes to see what is suddenly different, and use optics to more clearly see what that difference is. This monocular fulfills that need brilliantly. OTOH, if your optics needs involve high magnification and long hours of viewing, look elsewhere. This monocular is not made for that.
