It's a battery and does what a battery should

If you know what this is then I really don't need to explain much. It's a heavy battery cartridge with lead acid batteries inside. It slides into an APC 3000 rack mounted UPS. When you slide it in, it may not show a full charge at first. But if you wait awhile it charges up to full. Then you can do a self test on the unit to see if it holds the load. It worked perfectly on our unit.

are there instructions for switching the cartridge?

If I recall, there are instructions provided but it's simple. Leave the unit powered on, unplug the power connector from the battery pack, remove the screws holding it in, swap the battery pack, replace the screws, plug the connector back in. Check the display to clear any errors and/or verify no errors.
