Sea & Sea YS-01 overview

  • 1Description

The Sea & Sea YS-01 is a compact slave strobe that can be used for wide-angle or macro photography. With its circular beam angle of 100 x 100° and a guide number of up to 20 it is the perfect strobe for small Point & Shoot cameras or DSLRs. The DS-TTL (Digital Slave TTL) feature gives you automatic exposure control when shooting in slave mode. It is best to connect the strobe to the housing with a fiber optic cable. For finer lighting control it is best to shoot in manual mode. This is easy since the YS-01 has a ten-level power dial located on the back of the strobe.

The YS-01 is powered by 4-AA batteries. You can get up to 330 flashes at full power with NiMH batteries. With NiMH batteries you will get a blazing fast 1.9 second recycle time, so you will not miss all the action on the reef. The YS-01 has a bright 1W LED target light, that is bright enough to use as a dive light on night dives.

An external flash is your most important accessory. The ocean is one big, blue filter. As you descend, the reds and oranges quickly become muted shades of blue and gray. Using a color corrected strobe light will bring back your subject's natural color.

Connects with a fiber optic cable and gives you DS-TTL (Digital Slave TTL automatic exposure control
Manual control is easy with the ten-level power dial
Circular beam for a broad 100° x 100° angle of coverage
Bright LED target light in center of the strobe face is bright enough for night dives
Guide number 20 (ISO 100/m) for high power performance
Recycle time of approximately 1.9 seconds with NiMH batteries at full power. Alkaline cells may also be used. Lithium batteries are not compatible, and may cause damage by overheating

    Sea & Sea YS-01 reviews

YS-01 Strobe Head Only is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lighting Up the World Below I am an avid scuba diver and underwater photo enthusiast. I do not have a huge camera rig like some folks you see. I like to keep mine compact and easy to travel. I have a Canon Powershot SD990is camera in a Canon housing. Prior to acquiring the Sea & Sea YS-01 external strobe, I was using a Sea & Sea YS-17 strobe (until I flooded the battery housing like an idiot). I must say that I am enjoying my S&S YS-01 just as much as my YS-17. It is compact and rugged and I like the twist-lock mechanism for the battery housing. I also like the fact that there are incremental settings for the flash power. Range and depth is improved as well (comparing the YS-17 to the YS-01). Don't misinterpret that statement... the strobe head has limitations at depth... that's basic physics and light. But, I love what this little strobe accomplishes for my recreational use and I am Lighting Up the World Below!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Compact Unit Bought two of these and have them mounted with ball arms onto my camera rig. They do exactly what they are supposed to and optical TTL works really well. The focus light is a must under water and its working good, so no need for an extar focus light. Manual controls for those who likes to play with the exposure.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good strobe. Could be more powerful. Used with Olympus E-PL2. Good strobe. For some reasons it took longer to recharge and fire again then the technical data says. Easy to use. Could be more powerful. After 2 dives batteries were still good to go.
