JoeCo BBR1-B Overview

The BBR1-B BlackBox Recorder from JoeCo is a standalone, USB based, 24-track recorder that has been specifically designed for recording live performances and multichannel audio with balanced analog I/O. While functionally identical to other models in the BlackBox range, the BBR1-B is tailored for use with standard analog mixing consoles via balanced +4 dBu or -10 dBu connections using 25-pin D-sub connectors wired to the TASCAM analog format.

This compact 1 RU recorder uses electronically balanced signals. Its balanced inputs are the lower row of three 25-way D-type connectors and its balanced outputs are the upper row, enabling easy capture of soundchecks, performances, and rehearsals. With features optimized for live use—including virtual soundcheck, zero-latency monitoring, and power-fail-safe relays—the BBR1-B ensures secure, high-quality multitrack recording without requiring a computer. Recordings are written directly to USB2 drives in Broadcast WAV (BWF) format at up to 24-bit/96 kHz resolution, making it easy to import tracks into any DAW with no conversion. Playback lockout and accidental-record-stop protection keep performances secure, while multiple BlackBox units can be linked for larger setups. Designed with simplicity in mind, the BBR1-B is the ideal solution for engineers who need reliable, high-quality capture in live or mobile environments.

JoeCo BBR1-B Reviews

Nice Unit

I've been using this recorder for a year now, mostly to record performances. After learning its few quirks I've found it easy to use and quite serviceable. There are a couple caveats and reservations. First, the unit does not send enough power over the USB port to power even an outboard SSD USB drive - you will need a power supply for the outboard drive. Also, I was unable to use a standard hard drive as the outboard drive - only an SSD drive works, because of timeout issues. If a standard hard drive is used and the drive spins down, you will get an error when you start recording. The error is cryptic and not documented, but to their credit JoeCo responded very quickly with an explanation. Another issue: the recorded files have a very low level of noise. Higher than it should be, but not enough to interfere with any recording that I've done. This has not been a problem for me but is worth mentioning. Once getting past the issues mentioned above, I use the unit all the time to record shows and for this it does a great job.
