Olympus VF-2 Overview

  • 1Description

The detachable Olympus VF-2 Electronic Viewfinder mounts to the accessory shoe and hot shoe on Olympus E-P2 (included with camera), E-PL1, and E-PM1 digital cameras. The viewfinder with 100% coverage and 1.15x magnification shows you how the subject you are shooting will look under the chosen exposure settings. The VF-2 rotates up 90 degrees which is useful when shooting subjects from challenging angles. Its diopter can be adjusted to allow most photographers to see subjects in perfect focus without wearing glasses. An external flash unit is required when using the VF-2 for flash photography.

Note: The VF-2 cannot be used at the same time as an external flash. Do not carry the camera by holding the VF-2.

The VF-2 Live Finder, for the E-P2, E-PL1, or E-PM1 easily slides into the camera's accessory port and hot shoe when needed - for example, when shooting in direct sunlight.
It tilts up to 90°, a real benefit when composing shots at low angles for dramatic or practical purposes. The LCD is 2x brighter and has 3x more contrast than competing models.
Its high magnification and built-in diopter adjustment offer easy viewing with and without eyeglasses. The VF-2 refreshes quickly to minimize image ghosting on fast-moving subjects.
You can also adjust the brightness and color temperature of the view finder using the E-P2's EVF ADJUST menu function. Brightness can be modified + or - seven steps.
The VF-2 refreshes quickly to minimize image ghosting on fast-moving subjects.
Low Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS) technology enables high-speed transfer of high-resolution images.
Aspherical lenses ensure high resolution from center to edge.

    Olympus VF-2 Reviews

VF-2 Electronic Viewfinder (Black) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 129.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product for Macrophotography !! I have used VF-2 on Olympus Pen EP2 camera for scientific photography including with Olympus bellows (OM) attached to macro lenses (50mm, 80mm, 35mm and 20 mm). Eye piece is variably adjustable (up to 45 degrees) image in the viewfinder is very bright with good color fidelity; this markedly improves composition and focusing in macrophotography. I have also used the same setup on Microscope / photomicroscopy (Olympus Vanox) applications with excellent results. The same is true for outdoor photography. This one of the best Olympus accessory I have ever used and strongly recommend for any serious user of Olympus Pen EP series cameras.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must have accesory The VF-2 is as near a must have accessory as one can get. In bright sunlight, this is almost a requirement as the cameras LCD gets washed out. The 100% coverage of the VF-2 is a definite plus, with a lot of cameras views being less than 100%. Makes framing in camera simple. Having a flip-out or swivel LCD on the camera is a nice feature, but since the VF-2 pivots up to 90 degrees (looking straight down) is a great feature. The only real downside is when in use, you can't use a flash unit in the cameras hot shoe, but that isn't a huge negative. The cost might make you pull back on the buy, but you really need to push the button.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unexpected Benefit I read all the reviews and expected the VF-2 to be a useful accessory to the PEN (E-PL1). What I did not expect was how useful it is when using my old Nikon F lenses! Setting the camera on manual, with the fixed shutter speed, the display actually shows the (expected) exposure when adjusting the aperture ring! And the resulting exposures are accurate! No doubt, the built-in LCD screen behaves the same way, but LCD screen is too much affected by light conditions whereas the VF-2 (with the optional EP-9 eyecup) is not. As a result, my NIKKOR-S 50mm f1.4 is now my default lenses for my PEN E-PL1.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Makes the E-PL1 more usable Both my spouse and I found that using the VF-2 made our E-PL1 more usable in almost all lighting situations. The view via the VF-2 is excellent and really allows us to use our OM legacy lenses by improving the manual focus process with those lenses. Before purchasing the VF-2, both of us had a great deal of trouble framing and focusing the camera on sunny days here in California even though many reviews indicated that the camera's display was normally sufficient. It was our opinion after a period of time that the built in display was not sufficient and thus we purchased the VF-2 to see if it would improve our framing and our ability to manually focus the camera. It came through and now we use it in both autofocus and manual focus modes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Use it for my Leica X2 I purchased this EVF for my Leica X2 and saved some $$$ not purchasing the Leica EVF. I'm happy to say it works perfectly with the X2. The display is clear and easy on the eye. The Leica operating system all work in this display. Diopter adjustment makes focus easy on the eye. Fits like a glove, nice and tight.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Indispensable Accesory After much searching, I was able to determine that the VF-2 is compatible with the Olympus XZ-1 (not obvious from the specs, even on the Olympus website). Excellent functionality, well made, convenient to operate (one touch switches from viewfinder to on-camera display screen). When in use, the picture just taken appears right in the viewfinder--you don't have to look away to the screen and can just keep shooting. I wish the resolution was even higher, but it is more than adequate as is. The VF-2 is an excellent choice for those seeking an old school optical viewfinder experience on a compact camera.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A must have for EP cameras 4 Great reasons for buying this product. 1. Much better way of composing and framing your subjects. 2. Perfect for bright days where the LCD display on the camera is a little difficult to see, especially when trying to focus. 3. An extra contact point for more stability and sharper shots. 4. The inbuilt diopter allows me to leave my glasses in my bag. Only con is that the camera occasionally becomes unresponsive to settings changes. Switching from viewfinder to rear display and back again seems to clear this. Otherwise this viewfinder is clear and sharp and a pleasure to use. Overall I would definitely not be without this device. Highly recommended!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not sure it wins me over I purchased a VF-1 optical and thought it was Ok, but an Olympus salesman convinced me to go with the VF-2 once it becomes available, as he said it is so much better & really cool. Well, after receiving the VF-2 I was a bit disappointed in a couple areas. 1) the picture quality is not as sharp as I would have liked and 2) it lags a bit during movement. (not fun if you are using video) and lastly, 3) It has a much more prominent profile (ie: bulkier) than the optical viewfinder. On the positives, it will work with all your lenses and if you use the auto focus to zoom into an area, it responds to that nicely. You can make adjustments to suit your vision (as you would a pair of binoculars) for use with or without glasses. I am told it is a comfortable fit for eyeglass wearers. You can toggle instantly between the LCD and the Electronic Viewfinder. (you must be updated to the most recent Olympus firmware) I have the 17mm pancake lens, the kit lens of 14-42 and a zoom of 150mm for my Olympus e-PL1 camera and frankly, I am going back to the low-tech optical, as I use the 17mm pancake a lot. I suppose it really comes down to personal preference. (you either like it or don't) I strongly suggest trying it out in a retail (photo) store prior to investing big $$$. I might consider one in the future, after the next generation of digital/electric viewfinders come on board. I LOVE my e-PL1, 50/50 on the VF-2 viewfinder.
